Default Changing Dollars to Pound at Dallas or Gatewick Airport

Greetings! I shall be traveling to UK next month. I shall need to
convert dollars to pounds. Do the money exchange facilities are
available at Dallas airport or at Gatewick airport? Any suggestions
about changing money will be helpful. With thanks.

My experience has been that it's cheaper to convert at the European
end of the trip, but you shouldn't be coverting much money that way -
$100 or so at max. Use your ATM card while in the UK to obtain most of
the money you need. Charge everything possible on credit cards.

And don't enter the PIN wrong. I did in the ATM next to my credit
union and the machine ate my card. It'll be close to two weeks before
I have a new one. Scares me to think of this happening on an overseas
trip. Makes me convinced I should continue to carry some Trevellers
Checks as a last-ditch backup.

Before using your ATM for cash withdrawal in Europe ask your bank what
the fee is. Mine and many others charge $5.00 per transaction.

IME, FX services at any airport, domestic or foreign, are little
better than licensed theives, and most certainly will rip-off you
off. Bank branches may not be quite so bad, but I'd still wait
to use a bank in town..

Instead, I order some foreign currency thru a local bank or an
online service, like www.oanda.com/products/fxdelivery/, and
then hit an ATM with my bank's debit (check) card from VISA
(note: using a CC would be treated as a cash-advance).

BTW, I carry CC's from two different banks in case one bank's
computer gets a hiccup and refuses a card, as happened to me
at The Carlton in Cannes (rather embarresing). =Rog'=

Jet lag can produce some minor problems with memory, I once screwed up
my pin number on a trip from Europe to the Caribbean. One is walking
around in a minor fog for a while and some things just "go" for a while.
Number sequences can get jumbled unless you have a simple one.

The major problem is whether one's habitually used ATM card will
work in the country one is visiting. I was surprised to find
Mastercard ATMs were not present in Ghana, mostly or only
Visa was accepted.

Europe is generally well set up for ATM use. But Americans visiting
often use non-standard (for here) cards, like with credit unions.

Finally, the airport money exchanges usually have poor rates. When coming
to Paris, it is best to use either an ATM or wait to exchange cash
when one arrives in the center of town. Even then the rates paid out
at the "changes" will vary.

www.travelex.co.uk will give you a good indication of the current rate at
Gatwick, I'm not sure if you can order in advance for inbound flights - but
I dont see why not.

To me convienience is more important than saving a buck in a hundred.

When going to odd places in the world a bit of researxh is
advisable:

    >Europe is generally well set up for ATM use. But Americans visiting

There's nothing non-standard about credit union ATM cards, but
some credit union cards are not on the Visa (PLUS) or Mastercard
(Cirrus) networks.

    >Finally, the airport money exchanges usually have poor rates. When coming
    >to Paris, it is best to use either an ATM or wait to exchange cash

To estimate the true rate of exchange, see what the exchange
counter is offering to buy and sell at. The true rate is about in
the middle between the buy and sell rates. Compare it with
typical ATM/debit card rates:

All systems Cirrus, PLUS, et al) charge about 1%

Most card issuers tack on another, and gratuitous, cost of up to
2%.

Some card issuers charge a fee you for using someone else's
machine, typically about $2, US, so that on a withdrawal of about
$200 in the foreign currency it costs another 1%

So the total for the card may be as low as 1% and as high as 4%.
When you look at teh foreign exchange booths you'll realize that
this is a very good rate and the exchange booth isn't.

I see that OANDA will give you EUR 77.29 for USD 100 while at the
true exchagne rate you would get EUR 82.69, so they are charging
about 7%, not counting any shipping and handling charges (free
for orders over USD 750). This is not a paticularly great rate,
but might be acceptable for getting some pocket money. I'm not
sure the ForEx counters at a European airport charge more, and
they would probably be more convenient; at least you can exchange
almost any amount, while OANDA will raise your %100 order to $105
so they can send you EUR 80.

I've never had any trouble getting cash from an ATM/cashpoint.

Carry two ATM cards as well, if you can. Ya never know.

So Travelex will give you GBP 53.12 for USD 100, while the "true"
exchange rate would give you GBP 57.42, so they are charging
about 8%. Per a previous post OANDA will sell at about 7%, so
there's really little difference if you're jsut picking up pocket
money.

    >To me convienience is more important than saving a buck in a hundred.

Sure. Needless to say, if you think you will be traveling again
why not take home some pocket money for the next trip. Of course,
then you have to worry about a declining exchange rate. Or maybe
you'll get lucky: I made out like a bandit a few years ago on
some euros I got in Europe when a euro could be gotten for about
$0.86.

I keep foreign currency at home in zip-loc snack bags, which are
just about the right size for most paper money. Then stick 'em in
the backpack or whatever when travelling.

Or go to a Post Office counter in town. They do commission-free currency
exchange. At the moment the rate for the USD is 1.8709 per UKP (not sure
how that compares with other exchange services).

You will almost always get a better rate selling your home currency in
the country whose currency you need, i.e., at Gatwick. Your best bet
is to talk to your bank about being able to use your bank card to draw
sterling from ATMs in the UK (there are plenty at Gatwick as well as
conventional exchange bureaux), since that will probably be cheaper in
terms of commission charges (but it will probably reduce what charges
there are at the ATM if you take out a large enough sum at one go
rather than lots of small withdrawals).

Today's "true" rate os $1.7384 per pound, so the Post Office is
charging about 7.5%. Might as well use a forex counter at the
airport.

I suspect the exchange rate might be better at Gatwick - but
what's wrong with an ATM card?

It ate it the first time around? That's scary! I've used
the wrong PIN, once or twice, but the machine gave me a
second chance.

So you do without cash because you don't want to pay the
fee? Unless you have time to change banks and establish
your bona fides with a bank whose fees are lower, I can't
see what advantage there is in knowing how much they charge!
