If I had written it in German, the pronoun reference would have been clear, but would
as many people be able to read and understand it?

Not me for a start, and english gives us all opportunities for humour in the way
that construct sentences.

Mind you my french pronunciation meant that a waiter once heard me ask for herring
girls rather than herring fillets in a Paris restaurant, Filettes rather than filets

I had no problem finding AA or AAA batteries in France or Germany the camera
batteries are also out so you can find a match and they say Energizer, Duracell or
ect.. just as normal...

Add "we" to any part of the sentence as you feel it would be approrpiate

Batteries are one of those very rare things that are pretty much standard in the
whole world. AA & AAA are as common as Coca Cola.
