I have seen at least one ATM that did dispense coins (a Rabobank ATM in the
Netherlands).

Yes. You'll find them in the better hotels in the larger cities (London, Paris,
Rome). In the smaller cities (Prague, Venice) you may find more difficulties. So
always bring your own supply of US currency (which is accepted everywhere); remember
to carry a lot of cash on you at all times, preferably somewhere nice and accessible.
You don't want to be fumbling about for change when paying a taxi driver.

There are many occasions, however, when money isn't even needed. Europeans are still
so grateful to America for saving us from fascism (and for the Marshall Plan without
which we'd still be living in the Stone Age) that often enough in a good cafe,
talking loudly in an American accent will be sufficient to ensure that the drinks are
on the house.

We're still waiting for the Americans (God bless 'em) to bring us over some soap and
razor blades so we can wash and shave our women. Tim.

Every single ATM I have ever used in any part of the world had a button for English.
It always amazed me since most of the ones we have here were not offering non english
options at the time.

It's a legitimate question, there are many places that there are two ATM's side
by side, one using local currency and one giving out US Dollars. Says a lot for
their economy.

I've never seen this, but I've certainly seen (e.g. in Peru) the same ATM dispense
both dollars and local currency.

Not all of them. If I use my French bank card in a foreign 'ATM' (sic), then it will
ask me to choose a language. If I use my French bank card here in France, it won't.
None of the 'ATMs' (sic) of my bank (the Société Générale) have 'English' buttons. Or
if they do, I've never noticed ...

Indeed, English, not troll speak....

Serious point: you'll normally find that you have to use a 'foreign' card to get the
language options (not always, but normally)

And we are running short on Toe nail clippers since the Americans stopped bring them
over. So if you can bring ten for me I'd appriceate it.

Thanks

Although last week, when I went to withdraw money at my local cash dispenser, I saw
the following on the screen ...

'Disk failure or non-system disk error. Replace disk and press ENTER'

(I'm paraphrasing, but you get the idea ...)

Reminds me of what I often see in some subway stations over here. There, they use
video projectors to project newscasts and mostly commercials onto the far side of the
tunnel walls to ... entertain the people waiting for the trains. The video player
software apparently runs on M$ Windows PCs. Bad idea.

Quite often, you see the projected movie image freeze, then after a few seconds one
of thoses typical Windows error messages appears "General protection fault in sector
0918A:96B2E .. Please restart your computer". This then remains projected for hours,
for everyone to see, until someone reboots the computer.

Truth in advertisement just for once.

well, it just hit 1 to 1 for USD / EUR, so I guess it makes no difference now

Are you related to Tina by any chance - if not maybe you should meet up in Europe,
you'll have a great time together I'm sure.

aside from the fact that you will get Euros where the Euro is the "local" currency...
IF you want US lucky bucks, you will generally have to go get them after you withdraw
"local" currency from the VERY commonly available ATMs.
