Partially correct. I'm not antisocial.

That is often true.

Depends who takes the trips. I have fun on mine, and they meet _some_
definition of voluntary, in that I'm self-employed, and I choose which
trips to undertake.

I didn't say anything about your practice, Runge. And the same is true of our
July 4th -- many people will accept any excuse for a celebration.

    >We dont need to wave flags around and shout our pride of being french.

*You* may not need to, but many others do. Those *are* tricolors I see being
waved during Sebastien Grosjean's and Amelie Mauresmo's matches at Wimbledon,
aren't they? And at international soccer matches? And when Henri Pescarolo's
team is doing well at Le Mans?

    >We also try to be europeans, remember?

Just as we try to be North Americans, and share our July celebrations with our
Canadian brothers. 8

    >So I can be anywhere that day...and usually am.

We can too -- but the odds are good that we'll be in Les Halles, with onglets
and pommes frites, a good Cahors, excellent cheeses, and several fine Calvados.

    > Does anyone ever "really think" about any holiday?

Yeah, but probably not all the same people "think" about the
same holiday. Christmas, Thanksgiving, and the 4th are my
big three. The rest kinda roll by. Alot of folks I work
with are focused on the 2 summer ones, Memorial and the 4th,
they also tend to be a bit more focused on 11/11 as well.
Eatonville makes a BIG deal outta Jan 19th.

To the original poster, I've spent most 4ths out of
country in the last 12 years or so. Regardless of where
we were, we often stumbled upon various themed celebrations
of one sort or another. There are enough of us floating around
during the summer that usually someone figures out how to make
a buck or two off of us. Some of them can be quite entertaining
since they are often "thrown" by people with little if any knowledge
of US traditions. One folk singer figured any song HE thought of
as American would qualify as a "patriotic" tune. Some how the
rendition of various Heart songs didn't seem to fit the bill for me.
A pub in London seemed a bit confused by the whole thing as they
whole place was festooned in both US flags and Union "jacks".

If I were in Paris, I'd probably get me a book that outlined the
Allied approach into Paris and do some walking. Might also visit
the site of the old Bastille. We still got the keys, but they ain't
got the locks no more. By the by, within Paris you can find a
park with a Statue of FDR, and street named after Wilson, and one
after Kennedy too IIRC. The French and the US are much like
sibilings. Often giving each other a hard time, but there together
in the end.

Quite honestly, we wouldn't be celebrating the 4th if the French
hadn't been there at Yorktown so there is some symetry there. Go
announce "Lafayette, we are here" in a bar or something.

No reason they shouldn't be fun (and yes, I take a lot of business trips).
