What would he do that people hated, and what could he possibly do that
would be any less popular in Europe than W? Clinton was generally quite
popular in Europe.

Yes, it is. Haven't you ever travelled on business?

A lot of reason, actually. You don't pick the destination. Your use of
time is dictated by someone else. You must dress, act, behave, and work
according to someone else's instructions. You have no free time. You
see nothing of the destination except a few business locations. You are
generally rushed and short of sleep. You have no clean clothing but you
are expected to wear a suit. And so on. The list is quite long.

That's a bit rich. You're the one claiming it's not fun- or voluntary.

A lot of us have already been there and done that.

Do we have to put up with guys who have never been anywhere on business
and yet do not hesitate to criticize those who must travel for such
reasons?

No place is a playground on a business trip.

I would disagree with many of the above 'definitions' of a business
trip. It depends on many factors, not least what you _do_ for a living.

The last ones I saw were waving Portuguese flags, IIRC.

Are there good Frenchmen?

Yes. Been there, done that, and they have my full sympathy.

Yes, there is. I can find it pretty easily.

That can be a feature. Business trips have taken me to places I would
otherwise never dreamed of going to, and in many cases my eyes have been
opened to those places' unique charms.

    > Your use of time is dictated by someone else.

Some of it.

    > You must dress, act, behave, and work according to someone else's
    > instructions.

Somewhat, depending on your job. But that's about work, not about a business
trip in particular.

    > You have no free time.

Change your ticket and stay the weekend. Go out in the evening or the
morning. Don't sit in the hotel watching movies.

    > You see nothing of the destination except a few business locations.

See above. If you are sandwiched in between other trips, sure. But otherwise
you can make a little time. Befriend people you meet for work; everyone
loves to show off where they come from. They'll show you the time of your
life.

    > You are generally rushed and short of sleep. You have no clean clothing
    > but you are expected to wear a suit.

If you are expected to wear a suit, then your hotel laundry bill will be
reimbursed.

    > And so on. The list is quite long.

But not very convincing, at least to me. I just had to visit three
countries, each a plane ride apart, in a little over a week. I attended
meetings, prepared and delivered a bunch of day-long presentations, and of
course had the inevitable hotel-restaurant business meals. And yet, between
all the working and flying and Powerpointing, I managed to have a great
time. In the evenings I walked around, exploring and chatting with people,
trying new foods, seeing the sights. Not only that, but the two weekend days
in the middle I had entirely to myself, basically a free mini-vacation since
the air travel and hotel were paid for.

Make the most of it.

There *has* to be. I've seen Snoopy knocking it back (in his
fantasy as the World War I aviator in France) in the Peanuts
cartoon for many years now.
