I think I did mention 'cheesing off' your neighbours earlier in the thread, somebody here once did say to me 'you may think that you do not have any neighbours, buy trust me you do' and if you cheese them off then expect the authorities to come a knocking on your door ! we have had first hand experience of neighbours looking after each other here and keeping an eye out for each other here, which is absolutely priceless and a fantastic return to 'community spirit' not seen in the UK since the 80's in my old industrial north area, and I applaud them whole heartedly....formidavel

Would it be legal though? What about EU Directive 83/182?
1.1 Member States shall, under the conditions laid down below, exempt temporary imports from another Member State of motor-driven road vehicles (including their trailers), caravans, pleasure boats, private aircraft, bicycles, tricycles and saddle-horses from: - turnover tax, excise duties and any other consumption tax
3 Where a private vehicle, caravan, pleasure boat, private aircraft, tricycle or bicycle is imported temporarily, the item imported shall be exempt from the taxes specified in Article 1 for a period, continuous or otherwise, of not more than six months in any 12 months, provided that the individual importing such goods has his normal residence in a Member State other than the Member State of temporary importation;

Yes, usually local cameras fiscals dont go up the hills in the countryside to check for illegal caravans, however they do go there if some neighbour complains. Where fiscals are more concerned is when the plot is within Reserva Ecologica, and there it is indeed absolutly forbiden. One more thing, bureaucrats as you call them, do play a lot with google maps, and not just to look around for caravans but also illegal pools sheds and so on.

However you will find the same criteria regarding the temporary import of road vehicles contained within the current three United Nations Treaties on Road Traffic (1926, 1949 and 1968), albeit not written in such an easily digestible format, which applies to all signatories to any of those Treaties, the many signatories include the UK and PT.

I live in the Vicentina natural park; there are hundreds of occupied caravans parked in the bushes down back roads, for years.
I am not advocating this as something people should do, nor am I saying they shouldn't. I'm only stating the facts as I observe them in real life.

Sorry, but I have to contradict you again.

Going forwards, it seems likely that the "deixe lá" attitudes of the past will tighten up, so copying what has been done before doesn't seem a good idea........

IMO there is an easier / safer / legal alternative to this proposal.............. tow a caravan here then leave it here after your first lot of 90 days (or chunk of) leave it on a registered campsite for about 90euro a month when you are not here, then just pay per person plus elec when you are here............ that way you have electric on site, toilets, showers and importantly neighbours who keep an eye on your caravan when you are not here, then when you are not here family can use the van at their convenience.
No need to take it back to the UK for an MOT, no need for expensive ferries,road tolls and diesel travelling backwards and forwards, and you get a lot more for your money with a caravan as you are not buying a vehicle with an engine, no need to tax it either, no need to buy a chunk of land and potentially cheese off your neighbours, no need to sink a bore hole, no need to create a drain feild and install a septic tank............next time you want to come over fly in (my kid fly's in to see me for a tenner each way sometimes) usually the site will be within cycling distance from a supermarket, so no need to buy a PT registered car etc etc ........all for about 1200euro a year so basically £1k rent per year, plus the extras when you are here.................simples !!!.......at least I think so
then again I may the only one that does think so
who knows.
