We pay 8€ but they do more than just clean the house.
Also, we are an hour north of the Algarve, so the rates are not directly comparible.

My friends have a villa in Luz (Porto Dona Maria) and pay €8 per hour.
That includes all cleaning, and also changing beds and towels all year round (6 months lets, 6 months owner occupied) and taking/returning linen to the cleaners.

We pay ours 10 euros an hour, but she has been with us for 3 years and is unbelievably helpful, reliable and a nice lady, so we rewarded her with a pay rise a few months ago from 7 euros an hour to 10.

I only get 10 for steel work, and I pay 8 for a skilled mason who works like a horse.
14 an hour; I'll clean your house for you!

Re: House Cleaners' Rates of Pay
Most of our cleaners are paid 7.50 - 8 an hour though the majority of them are on contracts and paid monthly so in the winter they don't have much to do but in the summer they have to work all hours requested.

Re: House Cleaners' Rates of Pay
A hundred years ago a Mrs Beetons would have advised householders just how much to pay for these kinds of service.
Many Expat householders seem to be paying way over the rate for what is basically unskilled labour, although a reasonable proportion of travel to work needs to be taken into account, unless you are employing for a full 8 hours work on the day the cleaner is engaged.
Loyalty seems to add to wage rate, at the discretion of the employer, though loyalty as a factor is not well-defined.

Also if not a resident, someone who cleans and prepares a house for the owners/visitors, lays out towels, linen and makes the beds up ready for arrival etc, although they might not be considered highly skilled, they are worth what an owner is prepared to pay for the service as well as peace of mind.
