Default What dya reckon.....

This story appeared in our local paper on Friday.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/marlboroughex...5327a6563.html

I have to say, after living here for a year and speaking to other expats, it's about time someone actually came out and said it.

Is this just a problem in Marlborough or is it representitive of the whole of NZ

Perhaps firms need to attract back some of the Kiwis living abroad?

In my dept, more than two thirds are migrants, as all the Kiwis' are leaving in search of money! I said goodbye to another on Friday as he and his wife are heading to the UK...

Recruiting people from the UK rather than increasing wages to attract locals seems a bit shortsighted....there must be some 'unnecessary' costs an employer incurs when bringing in staff from overseas from a higher wage market as well...surely said staff will not stay long-term when they find they can't manage?

I don't really understand why the laws of supply and demand don't come into play here...'pay peanuts get monkeys' and all that...short of staff, can't retain them? Increase wages/benefits. Work smarter not harder etc etc .
