Isn't it amazing how the headline makes it sound really bad and really scarey, when in fact this has been known about for some time and the warning systems and alerts worked perfectly. Ruapehu will have lahars every few years, and there are systems in place to keep it as safe as possible.
Spectacular but not as big a deal as the headlines make out.
