You can get various different forms of heating put in, they favour heatpumps here which are pretty effective and can double up as air conditioning units - which we could have done with over the summer. Will depend where you're headed? They are just starting to get into solar heating as an option.
I know it's backtracking a bit but
A lot of the cold is dampness, NZ is quite humid, dehumidifiers make far more difference to the room temp than a gas fire. Don't know what cost they are in the UK if in the region of £100 worth bringing one.
