Hi Guys....new to the place. Was a Kiwi back (sorry bek) in the 70's now resident in Oz. I went to a small town called Thames about a year ago and had a drink with some locals in the businessmans club. I thought I talked like them and NOT and Ozzie.......WRONG! they were so hard to understand and then they had these quizzical looks when I spoke!!! and yes.......they do speak like that....some of my own Family speak exactly like you say. It's fascinating to hear your own tounge from a dufferunt engle. And I'm a Maori. Cheers! people......love it.

don't do it with that guy.........he just loves to "excersie the whole jaw"........whatever that means.

Now she is better, although I'm really disconcerted by her teeth......does she floss with plutonium as they are darned bright......and she doesn't do many English regionals, although the Wellington one is a bit of a larf.......

in fact I'd rather she was interested in mouthing rather than the bloke above....LOL

One poster said they thought the Kiwi accent was similar to the South African, I have also thought that.
Pat.

If their accent is so-o-o-o bad - how about this poor Canadian written up in the NZ Herald?.........Not everybody speaks NewZilun! A Canadian visitor to Auckland thought a rental car person was trying to direct him to ‘Private Parts Road’. With a silly, I-can’t-believe-what-you’re-saying smile on his face, the Canadian asked the person to spell out the name of the road again please. The rental car person looking rather bewildered spelt out, ............ ’Khyber.....Pass....Road’.

As a Kiwi, I don't know what problem the Canadian had!!!!...just jokin.' I've had problems with the natives myself....and I'm related to them!!! for a real taste of 'bush-Kiwi' talk, go North. Some of my Mum's relatives sound like they had just stepped out of the forest wearing their grass skirts. They do have a very different type of lingo north of Auckland. Kinda broken english-zillun.

Hi WallyR and welcome!

The kids found some DVD's from the UK the other day and were watching the youngest's 4th Birthday. Rolling on the floor at "How posh" they sounded. As opposed to "How Kiwi" they now sound! I don't mind either.

Wifey got the same laughs at work when she was telling them how she had got a new 'dick' at the weekend. (We redid the back garden including a new decked area at the back of the house. )

On the subject of accents, the 'secret' is to identify which words are pronounced in a certain way. To distinguish between Aussie and Kiwi, get them to say "fish and chips". The Kiwi will say "fush ind chups" while the Aussie will say "feesh and cheeps".
To distinguish between a Septic and a Canadian, ask then to say "about". The Canadian will pronounce it "abewt".

Having just got back from Sydney, it's really nice to not be subjected to the awful Aussie accent everywhere you go
