You're right the violence is in the culture, gang bashings are a manifestation of that. Where does it start? violence in the home?

People seem to get beaten up just for the hell of it.

Thats not what I said or was meaning but since your not in New Zealand then its hard to comment of what you know other than media reports. As much as it would be to comment on the crime statitics of where I left the UK many years ago.

New Zealand is by far safer than many countries, wrong place wrong time. No one knows the full picture of what happened yet.

There's a lot of truth in what you have said but in my view the lesson to learn from it, is for young people out socialising (and especially females) to make arrangements to see each other home safely...there will always be 'safety in numbers'. Arrange a taxi if necessary.
My guess is that she was probably followed out of the last establishment she was in and specifically targetted by some pervert, rather than it being a random mindless violence thing such as tends to happen after dark to lone males the world over.
I suppose what I am really saying is that we all know nowhere is truly safe from violent crime (especially not Courtney Place and Newtown after 10pm) and therefore we should minimise the risks we take to some extent in order to protect ourselves from it. But then if she was from Orkney, she was maybe lulled into thinking Taupo, NZ was pretty safe which at that time of day it may not always be depending on who you have the misfortune to meet.

Look you got a bunch of trouble makers still all hang around in gangs, the Mongrel Mob springs to mind but its in the culture
:D is what you said, you mean that the Mongrel Mob/gangs aren't violent or what?

I lived in New Zealand long enough, too long & experienced some pretty unique crimes relating to poverty and the widespread misuse of P. Saw an aggressive, confrontational, in-your-face attitude that seemed to me to be endemic in the culture. How often have we read on the forum about people being bullied in the workplace? and that's just the pretty side of the story.

Quite honestly I think NZ is a beautiful country with some fantastic people that is rapidly going to hell in a handcart, it's journey being expedited by other people (mostly immigrants) who sit on their hands and whistle dixie because it is "so much better" than the UK.

Lol!! a MM member used to drive my son's bus. When the kids played up one day he threatened to lock them all in the bus and fire a shotgun through the windows. One of the parents complained and was interviewed by the police, turned out the guy had a violent past and a record. Now someone else drives the bus.

My son thought he was great though, used to share rock CDs with him and feed him lollies :D.

isn't that the same as gangs/bad kids anywhere? Sorry but I watched a programme recently on Ross Kemps Gangs. The MM and the other ones were terrifying. I think you are making light of it.

My sympathy and condolences to the family of the murdered girl.
Im sure at the moment there is a case in the courts about a man who murdered an Aussie girl over here while she was on a working visa. So sadly it goes on everywhere im afraid.

Im sure if we stay in the uk there is more of a chance of my children seeing our real crime culture more close up, if not now due to where we live but in the years to come. Its another one of our points on our "why we want to go to nz" list, along with many more points. ;)

I think if you move to North Shore there's more chance of your kids encountering a gang culture. Certainly a lot of the kids at my son's school had organised themselves into gangs of one kind or another, one boy was suspended for bringing a lump of seriously GBH wood into school on the morning of a scheduled bashing.

Now that New Zealand's fastest growing gang the "Killer Beez" ( oh for goodness sakes, what a name!) has expanded into the North Shore I'm sure there will be ample opportunity for wannabe gangstas to find their niche. For some reason the police see the bridge as their first and last line of defence, will there be patrols on the border soon to keep out the wannabeez from Otara?

From the NZ Herald, refering to the recent savage bashings of innocent citizens on the North Shore:

"The mother of the other 18-year-old accused said he had been a "try-hard" gangster since dropping out of Glenfield College three years ago, but she knew him to wear the blue colour of the Crips rather than Killer Beez yellow "although he goes with whatever he thinks is cool at the time".

Now there's a sensible career choice if ever I heard one.

Yes, New Zealand does have it's problems, but I think your blaming of immigrants is more reflective of your obsessive slating of New Zealand as a destination for immigrants rather than looking objectively at what may actually be the causes of the crimes.

That makes absolutely no sense what so ever, what are you on this evening?

Where did I "blame immigrants" for the causes of crimes? I said that the country was going to hell in a handcart and that was being expedited by immigrants doing nothing about it because it isn't as bad as the UK. I did my bit love, what have you done ?

I'm far more sober than the useless judges in this country.

I didn't say that you said that you blamed immigrants for causing crime. I'm somewhat puzzled by your statement that immigrants are somehow abetting crime by whistling or sitting on hands or some such thing.

WTF exactly did you do to take a bite out of crime?

Good for you i'm glad you 'did your bit'...... quite what that 'bit' was and whether the 'shore' and country knew you were doing it, well who knows?

Your incessant slating of New Zealand is getting to be more than a bit predicable and somewhat boring.

Do or did you do the same about the country you left when you chose New Zealand?

Get over New Zealand and your experience...... you didn't like, we get the message!

Plenty of us do actually like it here, accept all the problems the country has and get on with life.

You've done your very best to justify to yourself and others why you've now moved onto to Queensland, seemingly your nirvana...............well until you no longer like it there either.

I suppose a few of us here in NZ could replicate your actions and start posting all the OZ/Queensland violent crime stories, drug cases, youth crime figures etc etc....... but to be honest i can't be bothered and i wouldn't want to open your blinkers out to the wider world around the Gold Coast 'current' happiness you seem to be enjoying.

this is very true and I won't so instead I will take my own experiences and they are not great. Particularly the yob that decided to speed down my road ar 110mph and crash into my dining room. As he was getting out of the car (that was the biggest joke about it - the fact he was able to get out of the car ) he was more interested in where his CD's were. The car was not his, it was his friends, he was 15, so was the friend, they were both high as kites and they had alcohol in the car. The one driving did not have insurance (not needed in NZ) and he was not sorry at all. So maybe there are less 'beatings' and ASBO type behavior in NZ (although I doubt that) but the damage and hell they cause behind a wheel is just terrible. Any country that allows children to drive a car without insurance has serious problems.

This was in Chch by the way, in one of the 'best' area's of town and him and people like him ruined my time in NZ.

Shame really is it is a lovely country.
