As far as I'm aware there are NO free prescriptions in NZ (except for drugs administered in hospital, which are, of course free) even for the retired or those on long term medication
If you are registered with a GP and a health authority then a prescription costs just $3 (assuming your drug is fully subsidized)
I take Metformin for type 2 diabetes. My GP is prepared to issue a prescription for 3 months supply instead of the 6 weeks supply that my UK GP would do. I really dont think that $3 for 3 months supply is a problem.
As a type 2 diabetic I think that its wise to see my GP every three months for a general check anyway and think that its $10 (yes my GP only charges $10 for a consultation) well spent.
