How bad is it?

I don’t think beer is expensive here (some good microbrewers as well owing to New Zealand’s almost unique law making it easy to make your own in the garage), wine is very cheap.
Crime isn’t a huge problem as long as you pick a good area, outside of major cities many folk still leave their cars open and keys in the ignition overnight. Most crime is petty theft rather than violent (if you want variety go and live in Auckland). I would happily walk anywhere in Palmerston North late at night except Highbury (which is like a sort of council estate, mind you there are parts of Porirua I wouldn’t live in either). Location, location, location.
Dunedin students are renowned as being a rowdy bunch, it attracts a lot of young students. IMO unless you have to go to that university steer clear, it’s hurting the universities reputation as well (devaluing current and future degree holders) as they have failed to deal with the situation

The 'pints' you get in many places arent pints at all, far short.
But I would gladly pay the price if I could frequent a pub which vaguely resembled a nice English pub in ambience and clientele.

One of the main reasons I moved to Hoko, didn't have to get woken by police sirens heading up Featherston and Botanical streets
. That and the lagoon, closer to the shopping and catching the bus up to university is only a short hop
.
During the day or in a car Highbury isn't a problem, in fact it's probably quite safe but I wouldn't want to take my chances late at night. It's like playing the Steve Irwin game, eventually the odds will catch up with you. I'd sooner live down on Ada street than Highbury, students might be roudy but they aren't dangerous.

1. You are frequenting expensive pubs.
2. Anyone drinking that yuppy beer deserves to be overcharged
.
Agreed on pubs, I don't drink out much (which is also how I avoid silly beer prices) in Palmy. One problem is the kiwis are all lightweights who can't handle their drink. Cafe life is the thing here and I have to say I enjoy it as much as any pub. Adapt, life is forever changing

a pint of beer is $8 here.
reasonable? I am talking about Monteiths Ale. The only Kiwi beer I drink at a pub is Monteith and Speights. so I can't help.

Depends how you work it out. At the current exchange rate a lot of things do look expensive in NZ . $6.50 or nearly 3 pound for a small bottle of Steinlager Pure in a very average pub is expensive I think!

I actually think there is a big market in my area for a decent pub which caters for food and kids rather than the drunken TAB and pokie players, but the locals seem very reluctant to venture out (maybe due to prices), its the expats that keep my local going.
Otherwise if you don't do it or you think you can't do it you are part of the problem. It's the whole attitude of "someone else is responsible for my entertainment and livelihood" that is causing many of the problems in NZ (and in the UK also).

Well it seems like not that much has changed...
But it also looks like we aren't moving back. Too many other places to see, too much money to be made and fun to be had.
I think my wife was really just homesick and I've convinced her a months holiday at Christmas each year is the answer
Fingers crossed we are off for 2x2 years of tax free contracts come august...

Where we used to live was a student rent/flat area serving Warwick Uni. The students went clubbing most nights of the week and when pouring out in the early hours smash all of the milk bottles, steal bicycles rip off car ariels, throw peoples plant pots around the streets and rip up all of the towns planted floral displays whilst emptying the rubbish bins all over the streets. These are NOT intelligent examples of the human race just the privaleged.
......Scumbags

Think you have to have 5 posts before you can use the pm system, make a couple more posts, then give it a try.
