Don't you just eat winter fruit and veg?

I do but in winter I miss the peppers, tomatoes, aubergines, cucumbers etc that I still buy occasionally but we wolf loads of in summer while the garden is producing and they're all cheap to buy. Ditto fresh apricots- we gorge on them at the moment but they're climbing in price again so soon we'll stop.

Oh I miss summer veg too. Stall on our High Road was selling strawberries for £1 a punnet! God only knows where they came from (February in London!). I didn't buy any, the British strawberry season is worth holding out for. I am a bit guilty of buying cucumber and peppers in Winter (my daughter loves them) especially as the price really doesn't go up to extortinate levels as I assume it does there.

Good grief that's cheap - what country were they from?

My uncle apparently grows tomatoes through the winter - I must ask him how he does it.

At that price we're all doomed. Hope you enjoyed them, each one must have had a carbon footprint the size of a watermelon.

Well yes of course, but we don't have much choice in fruit beyond oranges, apples and pears. Feijoas are not an option for me.

I find cabbage, caulis and brocolli such a bore, that I revert to childhood and have to persuade myself to eat them by hiding them among other things. I'll take swede if it's mashed up with carrot.

My favourite ingedients in the whole veg spectrum are mushrooms, leeks, peppers and tomatoes which I would happily eat in any combination, every day of the week - but price of these are prohibitive during winter months and being without them somewhat limits the repertoire for most of my favourite meals.

I'll get a ton of apples from the garden and prep them all up for freezing, so have to be a bit inventive to stop them from getting monotonous. Oh no, not, apples again? So I cook them up with a handful of frozen boysenberries, blackcurrants or blueberries.

I watched a news type programme where two chefs (one from the river cottage and some Italian Marco something) were arguing the toss between fresh and frozen. It was about how fresh is fresh and the amount of fresh food we wasted in the UK. Anyway frozen came out way nutritionaly better than for example baby corn flown in from Kenya as the food is frozen almost as soon as picked. Also re wastage frozen came out ahead as we only get out the amount that we use. Taste whys fresh was better but only when it was locally sourced and in season.

Probably. I wonder whether I would need to heat under glass here in Auckland. I think you would need to make sure they get a good level of daylight as the sun is quite low in the sky in the winter.

I don't think you would need to heat- especially if you grew them either in raised beds or in large tubs wrapped in cardboard or blankets. Though this depends whether you're in a frost pocket I guess.
