I've got the same question for carrots.

They are peeled, and washed,,,(why? )

Just doesn't seem right to me...looks yuck.

I don't eat carrots, potatoes etc particularly root veges if not organic.

There was a whole trolley full of them dripping onto the floor, just loose in the shopping trolley, no wrapping at all. Someone had left it in the middle of the aisle, even the NZers in there were looking at them as if it was the strangest thing ever...

Nothing goes to waste, eh? What with the trotters, pigs ears and bacon bones all available, alongside the trays of chicken necks and lamb flaps.

Those red onions sure look normal to me Crap Coffee, but yeah the price would indeed put me off of them a bit. Even though I would only buy one or two at a time for particular recipes or salads.

I do understand the peeled carrot thing, as they are usually sold like that in sealed bags for convenience, or as kids lunchbox sizes at premium prices. I guess for some people life's too short to stand and peel baby carrots or chop things into uniform sized batons or slices.

But I don't understand the red onion situation: there's no 'value added' time saving or anything as you still have to chop the top and bottom off and peel away the first layer of the scabby onion flesh before you can use it.

Could they just stop calling them chippies please ? The word is chips. Potato chips aka crisps if you are British. Chocolate chips in chocolate chip cookies, ok. Chips as in hot chips if you are Australian and some kiwis, ok. Just drop the word chippies unless you are addressing a room full of carpenters. Or you are wondering if there is more than one chip shop in town. End of bulletin.

I'll ask my mum, but they were chips when I was growing up here in the 60's.

this is a matter for endless debate amongst kiwis, used to come up at Friday drinks around the time a "fresh off" expat arrived......along with speedos/togs.....

all the kids I know call crisps "chippies" - doubt you'll change that one or "hot chips" - what almost everyone calls them now, just go to anywhere there is an event that is catered, "hot chips" is what the menu says, what the person behind the counter says and what most people ask for, unless they are asking for a cone or scoop or so and so dollars, where it's shortened to chips.

I agree it is horrible and always think 'What's with the toddler talk?' Adult to adult saying chippies is so wrong.

Oh lordy, today I came across bags of lambs and deer's ears for the first time. Euggg! Am traumatised.

What on earth could you do with them apart from give them to the dogs to chew on You sure there wasn't another section with earless sheep and deer heads for sale still can't get over the pighead episode myself...still baffled that there were so many, surely they can't be that popular

To be fair the lambs and deers ears were in the petfood section but odd that I should only notice them today.

I was in a fruit and veg shop with my mum today, and when I asked her why the red onions were peeled she looked confused and said she thought that's what they looked like. She didn't realise they were peeled! I suspect that's how they were presented when they were first introduced to the country and people kind of expected it. I don't remember them being available when I was a kid, so they would have been a novelty at some point and therefore the colour demonstrated by peeling. Having said that, there were some unpeeled ones there too.

We were in The Mad Butchers as well and there were 5 or 6 pig heads for sale. I asked her about them too, and she didn't know. I know they make brawn with pigs heads, so who knows. Haven't come across anyone who actually makes it these days though. Good to see the whole animal being used, although usually they are minced up and put in your sausages.
