Oh my god Cherry, just seen this post

If I can help you in anyway, shape or form just yell as you really helped me when we first got over to Perth. If I can return the favour just shout.

I have to say though, Brisbane leaves Perth for dead. For me anyway.

Hi,
Double check the bank deal as we tried that but when we got to the Uk they said that they couldn't transfer the account .... that we were in the same situation as anyone else coming from abroad - no help at all! We had to wait the standard 6 months in spite of having a healthy HSBC in Perth for 6 years!

Also re. renting, we were back in the UK for a year last year and yes, the truth was we had to pay 6 months rent in advance as we had no jobs initially. Without jobs they wont look at you for less, sorry :(

Not true.

I recently rented a house without having a job (retired) and without having to pay any rent in advance.

Generalising like that is not helpful.

Wow, you were lucky. I was generalising and I apologise that I am obviously wrong. However it took us two months to find a rental for a family of four. We looked in Oxfordshire/Berkshire/Wiltshire, going through estate agents, rental agencies and private ads. I was reflecting our experience and should have made it clearer. We were told that one option was to get someone to be a guarentor - basically who would stump up if we were to do a runner, but we didn't have that option as my parents were retired, again it had to be someone employed. In the end we paid the six months in desperation - we had no other option and we did look ... we really looked!

Apologies again for misleading, not my intention.
Becky

I've not been to Perth, so can't comment on that one. But I don't really hate Brisbane, though some days it can feel like that!

To be fair though G, you haven't lived out of the country for a number of years. We struggled like hell to get a rental when we returned after 4 years in the US and Canada. We ended up having to pay 6 months up front, double the bond and my Dad had to act as guarantor.

You may have a point there but we were never asked any questions about where we had lived.

There may well have been some credit rating check but I am not aware of how that was done and it was cetainly a straightforward seamless process.

I can not compare to how it may have been done in the past as I have never rented before.

We applied through the usual estate/letting agent channels.

Perth (Back but not for long :p)

I emailed an estate agent in the UK and asked what they required, they said they were happy with 2 references (personal) and a month up front and month bond, and employment details, they also said they understood the situation of moving etc and would take that into account. No mention of 6 months up front. Maybe that might be the situation with no job but OH intends to have interviews sorted ASAP so we will rent as soon as he gets a job (and it never takes him long.)

You must not have very High Expectations then!! ha ha........and with renting...same goes as with what Cherry said...we are using our local Estate Agent in England and they are fine...I did ask them about the 6 months bond ect and no they are quite happy to treat us with their usual 2 refs etc.......must be because we are living in Perth, W.A and they feel sorry for us.........

We went to Ikea on Sunday, it was bloody shut:lol:...should have known better.

Never Ikea shut on a sunday, it isnt in Brisbane. The first time I walked into the Ikea in Brisbane I cried when we hit the restaurant. The familiar smells were just too overwhelming.

We don't have Sunday opening here in Perth. Nothing but Bunnings and the local IGAs are open on Sunday.
