Sh!t -when was this introduced? Only yesterday I was reading a post that said that you can register with a doctor immediately upon your return! So what happens if we or our 14 y/o son need any medical or dental treatment in that first six months? Will our son be allowed to register immediately or will he also have to wait 6 months for free treatment?
I think though that there is a timeframe. We had been away 3 years so that was too long or something. EDIT: I am still looking for info but from what I can gather if you are away for longer than 3 months these rules apply. |
Re: Spring coming early again.
Well this is worrying as I cannot find any information confirming these rules! We were emphatically told by our local GP that we could not register and were not entitled to NHS treatment for 6 months as we had lived outside of the UK (she even accused us of only coming back to get free medical care!). All the NHS and Department of Health pages say we are entitled! I don't understand!!:frown:

I'd suggest print those pages out and take them to the GP! If you're entitled, you're entitled. Good luck. |

BTW - Thanks for the replies alicecat
By the way, I'm curious as to which part of Oz you are from & which part of UK you live now, if you don't mind me asking? Just wondered what you missed about the UK when you came home to Oz - it's great to hear it from another perspective. :) |

I agree with all the posters who have said it is just too hot in Australia. Imagine surviving it without aircon or a few showers everyday. With the environmental problems Australia is facing those two lifesavers may not be an option in the future.
Until you have lived there there is no way you can know if it is a better lifestyle to be in the heat. If people complain that they spend too much time indoors in the UK escaping the cold, then they may actually find they will spend the same amount of time indoors escaping the heat in Australia. I think the UK weather is ideal. Not too hot and not too cold. Enough change to make it interesting. Lets just hope the concerns about the path of the Gulf Stream which gives us this lovely weather come to nothing. |

We were home last March to May...(07) and myself and my sons had dental treatment....I had to pay for mine (it was a loose filling)it was still far cheaper than here in Aus and much better treatment and my sons (due to a cock up..again..for their check up with their school dentist) I made my sons an appointment for check ups ....and we were fine and even were registered with the local dentist and they have just sent a reminder for their 6 month check up....we used my father in laws address as that was where we were staying, they knew we were living in Aus but we going to come back to the U.K to live....they were great...again for the same Doctors... my son had an injury to his ankle (playing football) and was seen in no time and sent for an exray...no problems so not sure what "Backhome" meant but we were, we even fine.....and really more than happy with the service!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!we have been here in Aus nearly 10 years now....................we even joined the European Health Insurance Card and had no problems whatsever......
Thanks for that Brits1.... One of the reasons I ask is because our son is almost 12 months into a 2.5 year course of braces that have so far cost us around $3000 (over a 1000GBP). I'm hoping that once we get back, he (being under 16) will be eligible for free treatment to continue the rest of the work required. Does anyone else have any experience of this after returning to UK? I'm also a bit worried that we won't get anyone in the UK to finish off someone elses dental work at all, let alone for free. I'd like to think we would be eligible for free treatment, especially if what I hear is true - that migrants from other countries are immediately eligible. Afterall between mysef and OH, we have paid over 30 years of tax & NI before we moved to Oz!!!! |

Really?? I was in Malaysia for 11 years and we came back and all was fine, used the doctors, nobody mentioned anything about having to wait. Even when I used to come back on holiday if the children needed to see a Doctor it was never a problem.

Anyone returning to the UK with the right to permanent residence and intending to stay will not be charged. Anyone coming to the UK for a holiday from a country with a bi-lateral agreement concerning health will not be charged for a condition which arose after arrival. Anyone coming to the UK after an absence of more than three months will be liable to charges irrespective of their citizenship BUT if you are just going abroad for a one-off eg. working holiday that won't affect you. This does not apply to people moving to the EC. God, I hope that I'm not just repeating what someone else has already posted. This is too early for me to be doing 'work'! Dave ps just realized that I've got my own dilemma regarding 'Domicile' to sort out i.e. I've lived in the UK for 12 years so I'm resident and ordinarily resident but I'm domiciled in Australia because I own a home there whereas I'm 'lodging' with my father. However, my father has now passed away and I'm still living here and I'm in the process of purchasing his house. Will this affect my domicile and, more importantly, my tax obligations in the UK (and OZ!) My head hurts now - I'm sticking to talking about Tottenham Hotspur in future, light, flippant, unimportant, useless. |
