Getting back to the question
what about amateur theatre? You don't have to act. There's sets, props, costumes etc. and theatre people are usually a lot of fun.
There's always book groups. Some of them take it all too seriously, but others are a good evening out.
I'm thinking the same thing, that when we get back I want to get involved in something fun and meet people.

For sometime now, both in England and here, I have been thinking about how to make new friends and sort of belong to something when i return to UK.
I do have a few issues in deciding, or indeed, finding something to suit me.
Here are my basic requirements
1. Must not be religious in anyway as I am agnostic
2. Not a place full of bitching gossips. As soon as all that sort of crap starts i am off like a shot.
3. Not a gaggle of domesticated women into knitting, cooking and housewifely duties bleughhh!!
4.Must be something to broaden my horizons, open my mind, and fulfil my need to connect with likeminded people. I cannot bare emotionally retarded people who are not in touch with who they are, or have any sense of empathy or compassion for others.
Right... thats the basics.
I know Faye will pop up now, as when I was in England I did briefly look at the Humanist Society, but I'm not that sure what they do!! Or if its really the right thing for me. I guess more research is required.
I think what I am looking for is something like a church community but without the religious connection.
Anyone else been thinking about how to get involved with new people?

Hi Flea
The gardening thingy...have you been watching Hugh Fearnly-tWhittingstall? Last weeks episode mainly, he starting up some website or another for people who have land, to loan it to someone who doesn't, who will cultivate it in exchange for a few veggies?
The other suggestion for a club involves fine dining - The Pudding Club!
You go to a pub/restaurant for an evening with other like minded foodies, you have 2 light courses followed by sampling up to 6 puds which you then debate over, decide which was best and give scores out of ten (or whatever), always sounds yummy to me, but my OH isn't really a pudding man.
Hope you find something

Girl after my own heart Ann
I am a big time garden person. In fact I completed 2/3 of a HND in horticulture years ago, but had to give it up when I split from my ex.
I was already intending to get into gardens and creating my dream patch of earth.
Australias complete lack of interest in creating beautiful gardens was a big disappointment to me. Sure, you get the very odd one that has made an effort, but in general they dont seem to give a toss.

It depends. If you have a specific interest in a particular activity or hobby, it might be possible to find a group that is based on that.
Otherwise if you like being around kids or teenager, you could become a scout leader or guide leader perhaps. Leaders in good scout / guide groups often become good friends and hold some activities just for leaders without the kids around. It can give you a real sense of belonging to a community.
If your local area has a community centre, go there and see if there's anything on that interests you.

But why have 2 light courses firs? - surely you get optimum pleasure out of diving straight to the puds ?
