I know someone's going give me the old "people that are bored are boring" line, but I don't care!! It's BORING!! There's no laugh, all the pubs are the same, bland, bland, bland. No character, no culture. Sorry, don't mean to offend but it's just my opinion, and I for one, like a good night out. No chance here, can't even be bothered to go out, rather stay in with a bottle of wine and a dvd.

Totally agree Jo. The best night out we had in Australia was in Sydney. We'd gone there to watch the Tri-nations rugby league and Great Britain won the match. Afterwards we found a pub near the ground and met loads of Brits - they were all socialising and having a real laugh. We didn't know any of them but everyone made the effort to be freindly and talk to each other.

We did used to try to get into Melbourne city every few weeks for a meal and it was lovely but such an effort to get there and back from the suburbs.

What a shame that you and me and all the other expats who are bored out of their brains a) don't know each other and b) don't live in the same street because I'm sure we'd have a ball, a laugh, a drink (or 10!) and a great social scene! Perth is just too widespread. Even some of my closest friends from England don't stay in touch, just because we all live too far from each other. Damn suburbs!

So what's with the 'outdoor lifestyle' you aussies keep harking on about then, or does that only happen when you're not working at w/e's? All this cr*p about not watching tv 'cos the better, outdoor lifestyle is utter and total nonsense. My hubby leaves for work around 6.15am 6 days a week and goes to his sport if he's not working on a Sunday at 8pm, we still manage to stay out late in the week.

Just a couple of points in response to some of the above:

It's bright and warm before 5.30 each morning so plenty of people are out jogging, cycling, walking their dogs, and boating at that time (in Cleveland, 35mins drive from Brisbane) Workmen start at 7am and leave by 4pm so during the week they enjoy the outdoor lifestyle each morning and evening.

When I stayed out in Brisbane with some of my wifes (Australian) workmates we had no trouble in getting a taxi home at 4am - back just in time to see the sunrise!

On your reccie trip, TraceyW, spend a Friday evening in the Belgian Beer Cafe - the food is excellent and the bar is as crowded as anyone would want! Check out their website:

www.belgianbeercafebrussels.com.au

There are also lots of restaurants and clubs to choose from - just keep an open mind..

Good luck with it all.

Sirromet Winery have a really good 'degustation' menu - 7 (I think) courses with a different wine with each course for around $70. I've also heard that their Sunday Lunch is good but haven't tried it yet.

For really good inexpensive Thai Food try the Thai Cuisine on the corner of Bainbridge & Gordon Street - really good service too.... and BYO.

The Raby Bay Oriental is also good - the chefs specials are tasty: Shredded beef, Singapore Noodles, Peppered King Prawns (ask for 'shell off' - less messy), and Scallops - Yummy!

There is also a wonderful Indian Restaurant - food full of flavour - nearer to you at The Victoria Point Shopping Centre -- sorry can't remember its name ( getting old!) but it's next to the ANZ Bank, and owned by the chef.

Let me know if you want more (pm me)

Never been to bed at 8.00 pm in my life (11.30 pm usually AND I work as well!), and what's more I don't know anyone who goes to bed at 8.00 pm either. Where on earth do you all live in Perth, and who do you associate with? With all this stuff you come up with about no pubs, no life, it is as though you live on a completely different planet to me! Or could it be that some of you are not letting a few facts get in the way of a good story?

You are slightly twisting posts here. Louise doesn't live in Perth either.

why oh why oh why do some people insist on challenging others?

if your life is so wonderful, good luck to you - go and enjoy it and stop questioning others!

we all have different experiences, and do the best we can in life, leave us in peace..................

Also depends on what life you lead in the UK. For me i never stopped. Kids had their hobbies/sports most evenings and weekends. Hubby and I had a very busy social life including hitting those clubbing scenes that stayed open all night We travelled all over, Scotland and Ireland too. Went abroad twice a year. Yet we still came to Perth Only because we thought we knew better and had the chance. No comparison really.

I feel the same Rachel - why did we do it? We too gave up a great lifestyle, good social life, holidays in Florida and Spain, all to go to Australia where we couldn't even afford to pay the rent

Still, we're back home now and already feeling much brighter and more positive. It will take ages before we are back to where we were, but hubby is working already and it's so good to be earning a decent wage again. We've just signed for a rented house and our stuff should be arriving next week

Hang on in there and hopefully you'll soon be on your way
