And more importantly, the animals won't be put in a situation that ends up with them being broken-hearted and frightened.
Thanks for that....

Please don't put them on Craigslist, if you have made the decision that you can't take them with you then re-home them via a reputable shelter. You can often keep them while they are being advertised via the shelter so at least they are in a home environment. It may mean that you ought to start trying to re-home now, rather than keeping them until the last minute, just so there is time for the shelter to find someone.

Please, please, don't do it via Craigslist, your pets might be lucky but they might very well not be. A shelter doesn't guarantee good owners but they stand a better chance that way.

But at least with Craigslist I have the chance of choosing who gets to be home to the pets. I can meet with them and interview them and even see their homes and if I think it would be a good fit. Of course I don't plan on shipping them off to the first available response.

Can anyone advise what it does cost to ship a (small) dog from Australia to the UK at the moment?

Also, how stressful is it for the pet to be in the hold area, presumably surrounded by other pets in crates.

Not really stressful at all. In 1995 I took home five Chihuahuas. They had to go into quarantine in those days. They did great. No issues. However for other reasons......We all ended back in the USA. Four years ago I sent a 4lb chihuahua from NYC to Belfast. Shortest route. He arrived in great shape and as a show dog he became # 1 longcoat in UK. Not nearly as important as the wonderful home he has in retirement. Have been to visit him twice.

We had that choice with the shelter that helped us rehome our dog. They posted her pic and details on petfinder.org, and then notified us when someone was interested in her. It was a mother and child. The mom and little girl actually came to our home, with their dog, to see how the 2 would get along. We had the option of saying no to them, if for some reason we didn't like them. Meeting the mom & child really helped to dispel our anxiety over giving our dog up.

I think it is fair enough for people to advise you not to get more pets. Looking after them always falls on the Mum and if you're not that keen (as I am not) then you end up in these difficult situations.

Its going to cost around $900 to take our cat from tampa to gatwick that is without a pet carrier - our dog we have to leave behind she is a french bulldog and they are not allowed to fly - my friend will have her - if you have 3 dogs and a cat its going to cost around $5000 and if the dogs are "tolerable" maybe it would be better to get them rehomed in the US.

Yes, of course, I just don't think she needed to do it in such a way as to make me feel horrible....

We all have our own thoughts and ideas but carrying out harsh judgments and criticisms on someone you've never even met is really kind of unnecessary.

Well I've been getting quotes to ship 2 cats and 2 dogs from Switzerland (aka the world's most expensive country) to Houston. Lufthansa charges Euro 90 for each cat (who will travel in the cabin) and euro 150 for our border collie and Euro 300 for our deerhound - so if you shop around, you can get more reasonable prices.

Well you came on here to post about dumping your pets - so I would think you might meet with judgmental attitudes from animal lovers... And so you have.

I got that quote direct from British Airways - no middle man involved - i take the cat to the airport myself and drop her off and meet her at the other end. Thats a good quote as using pet carriers put another 6-700 on it
they wont allow cats to travel in the cabin international which also i dont mind because if she meows all the way its going to be awful and so many people have cat allergies i wouldnt want the whole cabin sneezing lol
Its going to be sad leaving our frenchie behind but the risks with flying her are to great and BA or any other airline wont take her because shes a snub nosed breed. Shes going to be with a great friend so im happy about that

Europe to the USA always cheaper, ESP with on board animals. Even USA to mainland Europe is ok.......it's just FROM the USA where the costs are so expensive. I know. Lady from Belgium who didn't pay a penny from Chicago to Brussels with two Chihuhuas on board. She took them out of her pet carrier and held them through security. Not one person asked her for paperwork!!!
Air France....Same thing last year!!!

I flew Continental from US to Manchester last Sept with 2 cats, no middle man company, and the price was around $1500.

We flew back on Delta from Manchester to US last Dec. with the same 2 cats, again no middle man, and the cost about $1600.

Wish we could have gotten those cheap prices some of you are talking about.
