Maybe it's because I'm in California, but, people don't dress up much for anything.

Holy shit!!!!! I have seen one of those, a bloke out with one (& pet) at the park. I was amazed!!! I could almost understand having one if you had a very very very very old pet and you wanted to take it out for some fresh air........... but this thing appeared to be in perfect health - unlike its owner who must have been totally off his rocker!!!! TOTALLY INSANE!!!! Could you imagine pushing one of those around in your old UK town centre - imagine the piss taking ........... WELL, thats a first - for some reason this came up twice!!! |

Re: neighbours?
We live in a great culdesac and everyone knows each other there are 8 houses and a mix of families and older couples, we have regular get togethers more in the summer - Our neighbours are an older couple who have literally stepped in as US grandparents for our 3 kiddies I couldnt wish for nicer neighbours.
We all watch our for each others kids pets houses etc much nicer than UK where everyone hated each other, we had the most awful nosy old couple next door to us in England moaned about everything how high trees were how many cars we had parked etc I havent experienced anything like that here. |

And the older ladies walking around town with their purple rinse hair in in the curlers ready to go out dancing that evening ! BUT, they may have looked like that in the day, but, evenings were a different thing ! |
Re: neighbours?
Our street is probably a mix. We have some elderly folks living in some of the houses that I have never seen! On the flip side, our next door neighbors are the sweetest people you'd ever meet. When we moved in they brought over brownies, and it's not unusual for them to be baking and to swing by with some goodies. We've brought them quince jelly that we made from our tree, and Irish sodabread when we were experimenting. They have invited us to their family cabin (the mother is one of 10!) for Halloween parties. The husband is a contractor and is always offering help when we are working on the house.
Their daughter just moved onto our street and her family is lovely as well. Just this weekend we were out front and they all called out a hello and waved. Her husband works for a nursery as a landscape designer and is always willing to lend advice when we ask for it. (Though he puts us to shame) ;) When it recently snowed heavily he knocked on our door and offered us use of his snowblower. Another neighbor has an annual July 4th pool party that everyone is invited to. They're a nice couple as well. Which reminds me - it's about time we hosted! I think the "we'd like to get to know you" party is a wonderful idea. :) |

Do all American neighbours keep themselves to themselves or is it just here in Killeen?
I understand not wanting to share all of your business with each other, but in my street, i think that we are the only ones living here. The only sign that makes me think differently is that i see cars in the drive on an evening then they are gone by the morrow! I was coming back from my usual morning stroll of taking my step son to school and it hit me! As i hit the corner of our drive, i knew that i had seen the same scene before, yep! the movie Pleasantville!!!! |
Re: neighbours?
A lot of people here have never spoken to any of their neighbours. Although not considering myself particularly sociable I just freaked at the thought of that totally isolated lifestyle and chose our house because there were a few neighbours who do interact. One side we have an elderly couple who love to buttonhole you with their white supremacist theories. The other side are two real weirdos who appear to be drunk/drugged most of the time. But oppposite there is a big extended family of self-confessed 'trailer trash' who are fun and friendly , then there is a wealthy family with a Marie Antoinette farm vibe going on, and a family with young children who will talk sometimes.
Could be worse. |
