Back to cars! I`m about to get a Jazz, yay, mobility! I`ll have to stop being a recluse now!

I lived very near N. Randolph St , so thats what went on in that big glass building with the armed police outside it, always wondered!

So it seems I'm getting shafted by insurance companies because the UK "don't like to insure entertainers..." WTF?!?!?!? We're not all George Bloody Michael.

What kind of policy is that?!?!?!

We're also getting screwed because we've lived outside the US for the past 15 years, we still own property there and the Brits are worried that if we get into an accident we might go to a US Court and start suing or something.........

We actually got quoted £4000 a year. WHAT THE EFF IS THAT ABOUT?!?!?!

....and breath.......

And yes, we do have a letter from our insurer in CA saying we have 9 years no claims. Clearly it doesn't count for much.

Keep shopping!

Have you tried the Post Office? Someone got a good quote from them.

Oh no! Have you tried comparethemarket.com? Aviva didn't ask if we still owned property in the US or anything like that. Sorry you are having hassles

Our shipping container is being delivered tomorrow. Gulp. I am sure we don't have room for everything. We had no holdups with customs but did get stung for 2 days port storage charges because although the container cleared customs over the weekend, the movers couldn't book us in untill tomorrow. Hubby has gone on a "totally coincidental" 2 week business trip so I think if I can't fit everything in, some of his "might be useful one day" stuff will have to go!!

Wow! Britwhore, have you tried NFU Mutual? That is who we ended going with. I was able to speak with one of their agents on the phone and she was most helpful. Our file was referred to the underwriters in Glasgow and they came back with a similar price to the online compare sites. Some of the online sites wouldn't even quote because we don't have UK licenses. We were entirely claims free for over twenty years and the OH had a minor fender bender in 2011. In spite of that, NFU still gave us 6 years NCD. I know your circumstances are different to ours, but it may be worth a try. NFU has also been rated no.1 by "Which". Best of luck.

I have made the assumption that we are talking about car insurance and not house ins.

Pombat, best of luck for when your container is unloaded. Great opportunity to get rid of that stuff you refer to. Our part container is still in Canada and I wish it were here. I really would like to get everything put in its place and put my beloved yoga pants on. I can't believe that I didn't put them in my suitcase

Britwhore, that is completely outrageous!
Thanks for the reminder, we need to get our driving records from the USA!

Pombat, `im indoors was throwing stuff out like mad so our belongings would fit in the container, cant imagine chucking stuff out again this end! (It will happen, we all know that! I`ll look at something and say "why did we bring that" and in the bin it`ll go!)

Britwhore, I had another thought. Try the following link
https://www.albertgruben.com/Home/Index.aspx

This branch of Aon specializes in the film industry and has a branch in London. The other area to consider is insurance provided through any acting group or union that you may be involved in.

Just before I started to type this I noticed that you got a quote from NFU, so hopefully you can close the file on car insurance.

Very exciting! As someone who is starting to put the wheels in motion to look at moving back, I was doing some car insurance shopping on comparethemarket.com - some quotes were expensive in the £800 range for everything.. (with no NCD) whereas if they would take into account NCD in the £300-500 range car dependent. But yes there were some that were £5000!

Out of interest.. how much NCD did NFU give you and how much was the premium and for what sort of car? :-) Trying to get realistic estimations together.

Sorry BritinFLUSA my situation is very different to most. There is a huge problem in this country getting car insurance if you're an entertainer or sports personality. There used to be this same problem in the US but the Screen Actors Guild took care of that discrimination in 1968. Sadly the union over here (Equity) is the most no-shouldered, limp-wristed union ever and have no power. They're TRYING to get a lawsuit together but not sure of they will.

Basically I have to pay a higher premium (if I manage to find underwriters who are willing to "take the risk") because I could become famous or because I could have famous people in my car........so stupid.

Also I don't have a UK drivers license. My husband does and because he would be the primary driver we had to use his NCD......and he had an accident 2 years ago (damn men and their ham-fisted driving!!!) Anyway for the two of us it's £670 a year - which seems high but we were willing to take ANYTHING as long as it wasn't £4000!!!!!!!!

We got a 1999 Peugeot 206 diesel. Insurance group 4E. We were looking at a Skoda cause it's insurance group 2 but they weren't in our price range sadly. I also love VW Golf's but they're in insurance group 7 - a little too rich for my blood!!!!

Hope that helps. The websites where you put in your details are fine but it's better to speak to someone because if you're a US citizen or lived there for a while it causes a few problems and the websites don't take that into consideration.

I HIGHLY recommend NFU Mutual.

Thanks so much - yes the whole "occupation" causing insurances rates to fluctuate in the UK is ridiculous. Always has been. Sorry you have had a tough time. My partner is in Entertainment here in the US (Equity) and I know there are always challenges when people find out you perform for a living!

Anyhow.. re: Car insurance - that is great news about NFU Mutual. I think it's great. Thank you so much for the detail. It is always better than vagueness.
