Benny was a Hampshire boy. From Southampton

Don't know about the rest. Don't care either.

Linguistically it hasn't been a single country very long. For many centuries, most people never traveled more than a few miles from their birthplace: a day's journey was very unusual for the majority of the population, so close regional accents had a great chance to develop and remain quite distinct.

The Cambridge Encyclopaedia of the English Language is a great resource for learning about the development of accents.

A bit off subject but, it still makes me laugh.

When we first came here 2 different people at different times asked me if people in England spoke like they do in Snatch

The only 3 words I can understand in the entire movie are Caravan, Pikey and Dog

We have it here, but on a different scale. In Illinois, it appears that a particular accent has a radius of about 50 miles. I'm originally from Casey, 60 miles south of Danville, where people speak with a somewhat flat accent. It's similar to what you might hear from CNN anchors, and I just think of it as a "generic" accent. I'm now in Danville, and on the edge of one of the most annoying accents I can think of, and that's the accent used in Chicago and the Lake Michigan agea. And around 50 miles south of Casey, say from Olney south, it starts to get a bit nasal.

Wossie is from Leytonstone in East London, I think.

Hugh, Emma and Kate Winslet are all posh English. Don't know who the Band of Brothers guy is, do you mean Damien Lewis? He'd be posh English too.

As I have nothing better to do I'll just wikipedia them and see where they really come from.

Kate - Maidenhead, Hugh - West London, Emma - Oxfordshire. So all similar posh, South East of England accents.
Damian Lewis went to Eton, I'd say that's very posh English, no?

I think actors usually learn to speak with received pronunciation if needed for a part. Isn't Kate Winslet from a humble background?

I think she might be, but she has a very clear spoken accent. I don't know if that's from her upbringing or if she just kind of grew into that accent.
