We (stupidly, but we love him), bought a dog in aus , could anyone clarify the steps i take to get him orgainised for return to the u.k.
We are not returning until end 2009, so got ages to get organised.
I have heard of dog passports, how do i got about getting one, and does this exempt them from quarantine.
Also anyone any ideas about cost, does size matter so to speak, he's a teeny weeny schnauser.
Do i have any other vacanations to get him.
Thanks folks.

Margaret!! How'd ye no just Pm me?????
Anyway....A dog is free to leave Oz for the Uk without doing any quarantine 6 MONTHS after a rabies blood titre test has been done.
The dog gets a rabies jab about 3 weeks before the blood test which costs about $250. The blood test costs us about $250 as well.
So, to re-cap - work out exactly when your leaving oz and get the rabies jab done about 7 months before then. Then 3 weeks after the injection you get the blood test done. It's 6 months from the date of the blood being taken that you are free to leave.Very VERY rarely does the rabies injection NOT work.
If you wanted to go back BEFORE the 6 months wait was up, the dog would HAVE to do 6 months quarantine either here or in the Uk.
Yes, size DOES matter in this case ( in all cases ! ) as cost is based on volume taken up in the hold. So the dog is measured and then they'd make a crate up to fit him. You need to carry on with his annual injections also and keep a record of them as Dogtainers need all paperwork associated. You also need to get him microchipped here before going back. Get that done soon then it's done and keep the paperwork for that also.
To fly your dog home, use Dogtainers. We've got a small cocker spaniel and it's costing us $3400 for his flights, crate and all handling etc.
Margaret - they only fly dogs into Heathrow. From there you either have to collect the dog yourself, get someone to pick the dog up for you or get Dogtainers to arrange transportation of the dog to where you'll be ie - Scotland.
Anything else, then just PM me, dafty!

The rabies injection lasts a year so no point you paying for one now then another one next August. If your leaving next Dec say, then get the dugs rabies injection done in Jan/Feb.
You could start with getting him microchipped and contacting Dogtainers.
Im always here Margaret. If I'm not here then I'm at the end of the phone.
I'm stuck here until Jan when the dugs 6 months is up, although I could very easily leave today the way I'm feeling.

Yip, but Dogtainers are cheaper than Jetpets!
Also - $4400 for our shipping and $3400 for the dug! It's pricey, but they know you'd want to take your pets with you so they're in the right business to charge what they like.
You could save about $1000 by doing it all yourself but I looked into it and couldn't be bothered with all the organising on top of our own human's organising!

I think but would need to check, if you get him rabies vaccinated and go through the PETS passport scheme, he would not need to do quarantine on arrival back to the UK, perhaps someone else could clarify?
