I did look at this site. Shocking. And no doubt posted by adolescents and bigots, under the protection that internet anonymity provides.

But remember that you can find anything on the internet. It took me less than 30 seconds to find this site:
http://www.americanpatrol.com/

Does that mean someone moving to the US should expect to be treated horribly by Americans?

Fuzzyness Feb 19th 2004 12:36 am

i think that maybe some of the opinions that you have encountered towards to americans have been formulated by people that have never been to america and who dont really understand the country. its all well and good saying to an american you are an american but what does that mean. there are 50 states in the US which are as diverse in attitidues, outlook, politics etc as say 50 different countries. to class all citizens of the US as the same is completely ludicrous.

in my experience the americans i have met that who have actually left the US to see other parts of the world are far more accepting of other cultures and hence it is much easier to be freindly back when you get the impression that they are seeking the same thing you are i.e. a greater experience of different cultures and lifestyles. as you will be doing this by moving to the UK i can only guess that english people would accept you for trying something that maybe they havent got the guts to do. i know i would.

as others have said people have views of the americans based on preconceived notions of america as a nation state rather than the 250 million individuals that make up the country. i think that you if you approach people with a smile and are willing to be freindly and talk back on a level then you will be fine. maybe i'm a hippy at heart but i think that this approach works in most walks of life. good luck and i hope you find that england is a great place to live and that the people are freindly and interested in you.

Heather, do not worry about moving to the UK, you will be fine......it will just take a little time to get used to the change of scenery and culture. I am from Leeds, in West Yorkshire(Northern England) and at the time when I left to come to the USA(4 years ago), it was the fastest growing city outside of London in the UK and is also significantly cheaper to live than the south of england. One question though, why on earth would you want to leave the great city of Boston to move to England. Here I am living in PA and I desperately want to move to the Mass. area. By the way is your husband now a US citizen?

cheers,
Patrick

Hi Patrick....

Actually, I am originally from Mass, but I now live in North Carolina. Sometimes I miss Mass, because most all my family is there, but then I remember the winters and economy, and I have to smack myself back into reality...lol

I'm not sure if I could ever live there again... However, I used so spend summers in Pittsburgh, PA and I adored the area... But I haven't been back to PA since I was about 15. Why do you want to leave there?

Rob isn't a US citizen, no..... He only just finally got here from England in July 2003. We only have the two years visa for him so far. I wish he was a citizen though...It would give us a lot more freedom to move where we wanted to, without having to worry about not being able to come back to the US.... *sigh*.... Life!

leedspaddy1971 Feb 19th 2004 1:12 pm

Hi Heather, I am surprised you didn't apply for a green card for him as soon as he arrived. I know that this is a huge long shot for you but personally, if it was at all possible I would try and persuade him to stay for 5 or 6 years until he got his US citizenship. You see by moving to england now, you are taking a huge risk on your relationship especially if you are unable to settle. If you waited until he got his US citizenship then both of you could come and go between the 2 countries as you pleased.

I live on the PA / MD state line and my wife and I desperately want to move to New England...........I just love it there and the climate isn't as bad it is down here. You see, ever since I moved from England, I just have never been able to get used to the extreme summers in this part of the country...........I realize that New England can get just as hot but the summers last a lot shorter. That is something you better get use to in England, the weather is almost always the same, mild, dull and wet!!!!!!

cheers,
Patrick

I just find it so inadvertently egocentric and arrogant to assume that you will be hated in Britain simply because you're from the USA.

Give the Brits SOME credit. Sheesh...

And the source of your anxiety? A pathetic website with comments by a few ignorant individuals.

Not everyone is out to get the "Americans" - whether it be the Brits, French or Iraqis - so don't flatter yourself.

To be fair, there have been quite a few "everyone hates america" articles over here recently...even Readers Digest, paragon of journalistic virtue that it is (Ha!) devoted their "Thats Outrageous" column to it last month - an absolutely abysmal article by Tucker Carlson about how "Europeans" hate "Americans" - and he singled out Britain for special mention because of some comments by Red Ken and Michael Meacher. Interesting choice of target ...... probably the USA's closest ally at the moment, and certainly the most closely aligned on Iraq.....

Do you know or have some idea whereabouts in the UK you'll move to? BTW, Brits don't usually refer to "England". I've noticed Americans do. When asked where I'm from, I always answer the UK.

Also, your "fear" about moving to the UK is probably unfounded. Have you ever been abroad? Most Brits have been abroad, especially to European countries and a fair percentage (at least 30-40% or more is my estimate) have visited the US too. I don't think as many Americans have visited the UK either.

I live in NC (going on nearly two years now) and fortunately I haven't experience much hostility to me or my accent.

As long as you toss aside the stereotypes about the UK that you've seen on TV shows like Are You Being Served, Benny Hill and other "favorites" and from movies (anything with Hugh Grant for example), you'll probably do OK.

My (American) husband and I met whilst he was on assignment in the UK for four years. He loved his time in the UK. You could too!

Please feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions about living in the UK.

Just looked at that site - sheeesh! Very disturbing!
The stuff on there is the sort of stuff you'd maybe find on a BNP or Combat-18 website!
Arseholes...

Anyway -
My two penn'orth:
Somebody up there mentioned the "UK", "England" thing. I've noticed that a lot of Americans, even in the media call the whole of the British Isles "England", something that would definitely piss off most Welsh, Scots and Irish from around the islands! So just maybe be wary of that.

Most British peoples distrust of Americans comes from the US foreign policy over the last couple of years thing, but you'll find, especially in places outside London and those unaffected by tourist masses, that you are indeed treated with courtesy and a certain amount of curiosity just as maybe your British husband was when he was in the States.

We're not a bad bunch really. ;)

I am very worried that if I we go there, I will be subjected to constant insults and prejudice from British people just because of where I was BORN. How is that fair? Better yet....How can that behavior even be considered as HUMAN?

I'd really like to hear from some British people as to why this is?

How lovely of you to take my original post and twist the life out of it to suit your obvious need to insult people. Maybe you should try to read it again and take it for what it really was.

And just for the record: My fears weren't formed by ONE website. They are founded on personal experiences, several years of reading remarks (like the ones from that site), in the news, on many other sites, hearing warnings from British friends of mine, as well as friends that have traveled and lived there...etc...etc...

Also: Don't ask me to 'give the British some credit'. I happen to think the British people I know are incredible human beings and I adore them completely. I'm married to one for god's sake.

It truly sounds like you need to get out of the house more and make some friends. Go grab some coffee.... Calm down.... Take a much needed nap.... Your attitude is utterly volatile.

Thank you for clearing up the 'English' 'British' and 'UK' issue... I wasn't sure what term best suits the area as a whole because I have hear so many different things from different people. It's been a bit confusing, to say the least.... I will definitely take your advice because it's made the most sense.... :-) :-) :-)

Thank you very much for the offer...I'll probably take you up on that... Maybe even several times...lol In answer to your earlier question: Yes, I have been abroad. I spent the better part of a month in Manchester with my husband, before we got married.

Quite frankly, that is one of the springboards for my confusion.... When I was there, I didn't have much chance to speak to too many other people, but the few that I did happen to meet were very sweet and I liked them instantly.

Those couple of experiences went against everything I had been told, read of, and seen prior to my visit and everything since then....

I guess I just want to try to figure it all out first, so if we move back to the UK so there won't be too many surprises. I don't want Rob to have to put up with a sad and/or grumpy wife, you know?

Even more important than my feelings, however, are my concerns for how my ten year old daughter will adjust in another country....

I will say this much: The majority of the people on this site have been making my worries ease off a bit, and I truly thank all of you for that. It's making me relax somewhat and feel more open-minded to this possible experience.... :-)

Hmmmmmm..... I would love to say that I could ignore this little post of yours that I found a moment ago, but I really thought some of the nice people on here would get a bit of a chuckle, as I did when I read it.... It's quite funny how it contradicts your entire statement toward me for this thread.... *sigh*

HAHAHAHA!

I'm from Australia, lived in Australia. I have never been to the U.S. and have been asked similar questions over the Internet!

The worst statement was when I was disagreeing with an American about history (most Americans think WW 2 began in 1942, Blah!) and he said... "the fact that Australia is at the bottom of the map proves you all talk sh**!"

Here's a good expat site where we all make fun of the Americans and their ignorance...

I am from Melbourne, Australia.

Brits don't hate Americans at all. I don't know where you get that idea. A lot of Brits hate George Bush but it's not because he's American, it's because he's a moron.
