NCDOT want me to be insured on the car I'll learn in, which would be my wifes car. This is annoying as I have no real desire to drive her car once I pass my test, and from what we can tell we cant cancel the insurance without huge penalties.

The plan has always been for me to get the motorcycle endorsement and to get a motorbike.

The best quote I have found so far is about 500USD for 6 months. Which I find outrageous. But well, what can you do eh?

I guess the best way to do this would be in the appropriate forum. I'll post to that now, and link back to it from here.

Edit: So this IS the meetup forum! lol anyway, best to post to a new thread. Here is the link: http://britishexpats.com/forum/showt...46#post6910846

You might want to be on the car insurance for backup. I may not be that much more expensive with you added on it.

$500 for six months sounds OK. Have you shopped around for quotes? Actually, before you do so, have you pulled up your credit report? I'd do that first before getting quotes.

I had never driven before I came here. I got my learners permit, drove around the neighbourhood with my wife for 10 days then passed first time. All they did was make me go around the block, emergency brake, go down past a school and drive back. It was laughable.

And the joke is, I am probably a better and more cautious driver than 90% of the people on the road around here.

Of course, I would think that

I have been driving for a year and a half now.

... and don't forget, after you've had a full license for three years, call your auto insurer and tell them that you are no longer an "Inexperienced Driver" in NC. Your premium should be lower as a result of that conversation.

My insurance halved after the first year. I kid you not. I couldn't believe it.

Hi, I'm not a Brit myself but my husband is. He is from Gloucestershire (but worked in London for many years) and moved to N.C. about 2 months ago on a K-1 visa to marry me. We live in Raleigh and are both librarian-type people. Paul is hoping to find a treacle source somewhere here ;-)

World Markets may sell treacle and possibly Indian grocery stores. Are you the USC? Do you like Indian food? The Triangle has some great Indian restaurants.

I am a USC (rural N.C. native) but we have visited the big Indian grocery in Cary--found HP sauce there! I'll check out the other sources y'all mentioned. Thanks!

MY "test" took the form of a 5 minute "drive" around the small course with a fake road marked out at the back of the DMV building, doing an emergency stop, and negotiation the small traffic light, before getting the permit and being turned out into the city traffic. Never even had to go on a public road at all, which probably accounts for the number of morons that drive on the roads here.
I was glad I was used to heavy traffic back home, or it'd have been an amusing scenario.
