Default Anyone in Canada heading back to the UK

We leave in June/july and just wondered what makes others leave Canada. We live in Toronto. Here are our reasons: (not in any order)

love travel, very expensive here and not enough hols.

no sense of humor, it just goes over their heads

weekend/winter what do you do? We ski and board, but some weekends just to cold.

everything is so far for a little trip. etc live in London take your pick of places to travel to, for the day.

TV 100's of channels and not a shite on, and we pay of lot of money for the shite

winter to long, you just don't see anyone. Canadian's make out they ski, hike etc, I work with 40 people and they all run home to tv and eat - boring. But you cannot say this, as you get it ALWAYS rains in the UK. It is expensive, yada, yada Only 2 people have been to the UK! yes 2. So, I say, just to wind them up, yeh'it always snows in Canada

long work hours, 'I am my work' outlook

fashion, walk around the eaton centre, same old, same old. As for men's shoes! do they realise it is 2004

manners, I get into the lift in the morning, does anyone know the words 'good morining'- with feeling

did some night classes, what a joke. The teacher's english was a joke. O.K some of the students are heading the ball and missing it, but they are there to learn.Did I get A's, say no more

Are you a Aus/S. African/Kiwi No I say, then they ask me, are you sure.Because you sound like one. So, I say are you a yank, they say no, I reply 'are you SURE because I can't tell the difference between Canadian's and Yank' Silence - it is golden

pushy sales people. All they think of is a sale. Greedy bas#ards

no choco, chipy, real roast diiners.........

We like:

the space, trails, outdoor pools, because the winter is so long it forces you out on thoses really sunny days. bril

the nice summer's without to much rain

cheap to eat out

tim horton's

feels safe. even with the recent gun crime. canadian's are not bad people etc if you fall in the street they will help you up.

can't think of anything else we will miss. So, come on and give your replies

Look for posts from Alexandra. She is leaving Canada to return to the UK on 22 May (I think she is of Russian origin, but prefers the UK). You will find her posts about why she wanted to leave Canada in this section of the forums if you go back a few pages and she has indeed posted a comment today.

I'm from the UK and have worked in Toronto for 18 months - I can relate to a lot of your negative points.

On my personal experience the killer has been the work environment - despite allegedley working for a large international company, that element of being here has been dissapointing, mostly for similar reasons to the ones you have given.

Obviously every job is different but I don't think experiences like yours are unique.

I've lived in Toronto too - admittedly only for six months, but have also visited frequently and can relate to what you way.

I found most of the people there way too quiet and reserved for me - especially in the work environment. And I found you don't hear people laughing out loud much - even in a social environment.

Maybe they don't have much to laugh about. Financially I found Canada a place where you were screwed at every turn - short holidays, low pay, bank charges - and not even an "enterprise culture" to make up for it: my feeling was you were expected to be grateful for whatever job you could get, complacency ruled, and the sky most definitely was not the limit!

Upsides: yes, definitely there are good points: accommodation is easy to find, there's much less "yob culture", the streets feel safe, the pace of life is more relaxing.

So that's my completely objective view. I'm not trying to generalise to the whole of Canada, or say it's anything more than my own limited experience.

Why, thank you, Englishmom, it's nice to be famous... Of course, I agree with everything written by the author of this topic, and I am really happy to be going back home this Saturday. Things really worked out well, both my husband and I are returning to our old jobs and picking up from where we left. My daughter is terribly excited too, she claims that she'll go to Covent Garden straight off the plane (well, if I was 10, I probably would too, but seeing that I am a little older, I guess I'd like to sleep a bit first).

Sorry for the long quote but ohmygosh, you hit the nail on the head! I've just started hacking through this part of the list. Not that I'm leaving Canada (GTA) soon as wife and 3 young kids are Canadian but as of late I have been getting serious 'home sickness'.
I've been here permanently since June 1999 and am hoping that my longing for my dear old beloved Bournemouth was a case of 'rose-tinted glasses' and while there might be a small amount of that, Gem, your post has really said just how I feel.

Sounds sappy but I'm glad I'm not alone! I wish you well on your return to the UK. I think I'm stuck here as I'd hate to drag my Canadian family away from all they love.

Glad to get that off my chest!

Hi

.......just joining the list!

I do like it here and the weather, space etc etc is awesome (!), it is this 'forever' thing I don't fancy. I don't think I miss England lots and lots but boy do I miss the people. Don't get much of a chance to have a real laugh here and haven't met anyone that is into socialising the same way as the Brits - perhaps that is a good thing!!!!!

I do miss my home town of Bath - especially just wandering around on foot and not in the car!

We can go for citzenship next June, so will do that and then see how I feel..............watch this space!

Yes i have been here since 2000 june as a landed imigrant.
Married to a canadian woman and i aggree alot with the above posts LOL but i have a bigger problem.
when i left i didnt notify uk that i was staying as it says in passport blurb i had to. Also i left a big debt which i couldnt afford to pay after a while due to the crap jobs i ended up with here then i moved apartment and that was end of that.
Now i found out my mum is dying and has months to live (she is only 54 rare disease) and i want to go visit b4 she looses abilty to comunicate with me. but cause of above probs i dont know if it will be an issue when i enter UK.
I am not a bad person but was a victim of circumstance.
Any ideas? as she cant travel here now and i want to go but also want to be able to get in without grief and come back ok.
also i dont have time to wait for the PR card you have to get now.

So please any help would be apreciated.

Well I have to say since arriving here in 2002 I have really enjoyed it here. Although I must say unlike gem I don't live in the city or near it (2 hrs away in fact)

I agree the first winter here was cold but my second was a culture shock! I couldn't fathom -28 but felt it and truly believe when I return to Blighty I will never say it's cold in winter there again!!

I'm currently applying for PR and have yet to go through the process of working, although volunteering at the moment has kept me outta trouble

Home-sickness hit me hard about 4 months after I first arrived and boy did I wanna get back to London!!! After some time and hubby's convincing -lol- I have gotten used to the idea that this is home.

gem I cannot agree with you more with the accent (although I have never been questioned to be Aus or Kiwi...hmm wonder why? -chuckles-) and the rain comments

Yes I can relate to joggerjo about the sense of humour thing...gosh that's what makes us Brits! We can laugh at ourselves...look to our comedy and know that! 'Fawlty Towers' springs to mind Yes, just to be able to walk somewhere too without the need of driving!

I just guess we can't have everything huh? But I hear you gem. Who knows some of us here could be in the same position some time down the road?

Only time will tell! I've only been here a little over 2 years so I guess I have some 'growing' to do in my new home

we are homeward bound the first week of July, hooray. After five and a half years in Canada, feeling that we are glad that we came to see that the grass is not always greener, but as some wise sod on here said, ' it is just a different bloody shade'.
Bignut I would go to see your mother, as you only have one, and I doubt that the debts will catch up with you.
So, those of you who are staying, enjoy, and remember that it is all up to you. If you really don't like it here that the UK is still a great place and that you can always go home.

We came back to England and have been highly disappointed really. We can't afford to get a house and my husband earns more than the average wage and they just seem to be going up and up. this is a house up the rent where we currently rent. we couldn't afford to buy it even though it is tiny!!!!!

http://www.rightmove.co.uk/rm/templa...a_n=3&tr_t=buy

Also no one here really seems to be happy. Everyone wants more, more, more.

What I have realised is that I miss the England that I grew up in, but that place has long gone.

England could be a great place if the people who lived here just appreciated it.

I really really wish we could stay here but without being able to buy a house I don't see how.

My husband always accuses me of looking at England with rose coloured glasses and perhaps I do, but I just wish it could work here.

Well for me in england i had a great job was single and had my family around me. I rode a motorbike drove a car went fishing had a great time.
And riding a bike in england is fantastic on those roads.
Reason i left was i met and married my canadian wife who had a goverment job here and i decided to give it a go this side.
Its easy to miss the quality TV green lands earthy feel and family of course.

But as you say it is easy to build up this rose covered image sometimes. specially when you find it hard to acheive in canada wot you had in england.

I do like canada though just a shame i lost my skills while i am here having to do more basic low paying jobs due to employers not takin advantage of me.

I agree with the last two posts, it is hard to adjust to both countries. When we went back to the UK at xmas time, for the first time in nearly five years, I expected the worse. But I was surprised by how much I liked certain things. Daisymoll, you are right about the doom and gloom of certain folk back home, you would think that they cannot afford basics, but it is so untrue. My hubby has said that we have to make a point of staying away from the haters, as they just bring you down. The press has alot to answer for back there, they print such crap.
We have more going for us in the move back to the UK, put have really, really made a point to take off the rose tinted glasses. As for Brits not appreciating their home, you are right again, it has so much going for it. My Mom moans so much at times, yet she has 6 weeks hol, 2 cruises in 14 months, side trips to Europe which are so cheap, her family around her,a part time job to keep her busy- 10 mins walk from home, no debt, and lives in a great city in a home she owns as well as tip top health. I think great, but she still moans! oh well. Love her to bits but cannot spend to much time with her, as it drives us mad.
So when we arrive back, we know that we have made the choice and just have to get on with it and see the good side. Anyway good luck to you. As this is just my two pence worth.

Hi

Did you rent in Canada or buy? How long were you in Canda for?

Are you thinking about returning to Canada if you cannot afford to buy a house?

Sorry about all the questions!

We rented in Canada, and were only there for just over a year, so perhaps with hindsight we did move away too soon.

We are definitely thinking of returning to Canada, to try another area as we just cannot afford a house here at all and it just doesn't seem as though prices are going to come down at all.

After living in a Canadian house as well, it is so hard to look at English houses and imagine living there.

We have moved from a three bed, three storey, three bath house in NS to a tiny little two bed with one loo and absolutely no space. My husband also who works on site development tells me that the government here have doubled the number of houses per hectare or something that are going to be on new developments so I would hate to live on one of those now.

Obviously some things about Canada pi**esd us off as well, but overall I think they seem to have a better perspective and just are happier with their lots etc. I want to bring my son up somewhere where he will have the best chances and it just seems more wholesome in Canada. Since being back with a new baby boy, I so seem to see a lot yob like lads. That might sound like a sweeping statement but where we live they do have a problem with antisocial kids and it looks like a perfectly nice area.

Anyway enough for noW!!!
