Petrol is indeed cheaper here, but you're forced to drive more often, longer distances and in Sydney pay 11 (soon to be 13 tolls), run the a/c nearly all the time, insurance is much higher here, plus there's the 3% stamp duty you have to pay just to register a vehicle in your own name, throw in the renewal of licences every year and the fact that 2nd hand cars are much more expensive here and that buys a lot of petrol! How much more in denial can these Godzoners get? (answers on a postcard) |

Utter crap...
"The rate of homicide in any given country tends to be viewed as the best indicator of the level of violence. There are many reasons for this, with the main reason centred on the fact that homicide is least likely to be affected by the 'dark figure' of crime - offences that go unreported and undetected. As a result homicide is also more likely than any other offence to be the subject of specific data collection efforts." Source... Here, the police no longer show up to burglaries, unless you still have the burglar in your house.
Do Aussie police show up to every burglary in Australia? If so they must have their hands full, what with Australia being the WORLD LEADER in burglaries per head of population: http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cr...ies-per-capita |

You could also argue the exact opposite. That you cannot hide a murder (body shows up, person missing etc) but many people would not bother to contact police over a violent incident. Don't want the hassle, or being seen as a "grasser" do not want to go to court etc I saw a violent bashing outside where I live in London, and the police were not called. The offenders ran off and the victims did not want the police called. The Justice system is weaker here also, for example two convicted murderers walked out of an open prison just last week.
people in Australia are slightly less likely to report a crime than people in Britain. And a quick recap of violent crime stats: Assaults per 1,000 population: UK 7.5 Aus 7.0 So not much difference there. Murders per 1,000: Aus 0.015 UK 0.014 Virtually no difference there. Rapes per 1,000: Aus 0.78 UK 0.14 Woah. What's going on in Aus??? Incidentally Australia also leads the world in car thefts. http://www.nationmaster.com |

If you actually took the time to read the report then you'd realise why the Australian Institute of Criminology are saying that the only true indicator of violence levels is the murder rate... Of course only people in the UK don't report crimes whilst everyone in Australia does... And of course you know far more about crime than the senior researcher at the AIC that I quoted...  Isn't it about time you actually came up with some facts to support your views...? |

Re: to all who are thinking of returning!
rapes, muggings, murder, burgularies everywhere mate. No country will escape it. Didn't come here to escape crime in UK, we knew it was just as bad in OZ, but even if i liked it here i still wouldn't go on and on about the crime in UK just to justify my move to OZ:rolleyes:

I expect she has a perfect teaching job lined up for when she gets back to Perth in february after her two year working visa is up. It will be a full time permanent position at a private school, and then we won't have to read her rendition of the local London news anymore. Nearly everybody I know in Australia is a teacher, my sister in law, my brother in law, the next door neighbour. The are stacks of them, my husbands friends and my mother in laws friends etc etc etc etc. Bloomin loads of them, they seem to churn them out from the universities here like there is no tomorrow. Every other person is teacher, and most of them don't have permanent jobs, only temporary contracts. |
