Re: Knitting
Knitting rocks!
You can drink and knit at the same time might explain why I'm so bloody slow at it! You never know Pats don't know what you haven't tried- there may be a closet knitter in you yet! ... hmm actually perhaps not...

Hmmmm. Seems someone is only on this forum to complain and stir up trouble. Pathetic.

Re: Knitting
To reply to the original question, my wife and I live in Abu Dhabi and there is a thriving knitting community here. My wife is part of a (quite large) knitting group which meets once per month and they sit, chat, knit, eat and drink tea, coffee etc for hours at a time. She loves it!
Someone else has already suggested checking out Ravelry. It is worldwide and it should help you track down like-minded knitters in your area of the UAE. If there is nothing available, why not set up your own group? You will be surprised how many people actually knit.
I also know that there is a thriving knitting community in Dubai. This is centred around Magrudy's which - in case you are unanware - is a bookshop. One of the Dubai Magrudy's branches actually has a lady who is their wool and knitting supplies buyer.
The Magrudy's store in Abu Dhabi also has a knitting and wool section. On the days that they receive a new delivery of wool, there is usually something of a scramble and the best yarns are purchased pretty much as soon as they are put on the shelves. Depends who gets there first!
Amazon.co.uk also sell yarn and it can be ordered and they will post it (as will most independant yarn producers and suppliers in the UK).
Check out something called 'plarn' too. Certainly an intersting twist on the knitting theme.
Finally, there may be some locally produced 'exotic' yarns that you can source involving local crafts people using traditional methods. I feel that the more you look into it, the more you will discover and therefore, it could be a very interesting project!
Good luck and enjoy.
