Re: Killer road
Wrong.
According to http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com Dubai is only in the book for horse racing, the burj al arab and banana cake.

Road traffic injuries account for 1.2 million deaths each year according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). Ironically most of these occur in developing countries to those who'll never own a private motor vehicle - pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and public transport users. |

It's generally accepted that the most dangerous road in the world is just outside La Paz - virtual single track, mud road (prone to mudslides) winding down a mountain with 10,000ft drop and no barrier. I think it kills around 100 people a year but probably has 10,000 times less traffic on it than the SZR. |

Getting people to use their mirrors and also turn their heads to look behind them before turning or changing lanes would probably cut accidents in Dubai by at least 50%. |

I dont know in Dubai but in Doha they should ban using mobiles whilst driving.........unbelievable how they turn roundabouts whilst having a full conversation on their mobile phones  |

I had a car bang into mine while I was parking... I could see it coming at a high speed and could do nothing about it.. I could also see the driver's face and he had a fault somewhere and I could see the hepless panicy look on his face.. a big bang.. he had a pregnent women with him.. the women lost her baby on the scene and she died 24hrs later from internal bleeding.. He ended up with a brain damage... luckily I survived with mior injuries.. The speed was the killer... I learned this.. It does not have to be your fault to be involved in a fatal accident... with higher speed you first minimise your control on the car and secondly you maximise the fatality chances.. you jeoperdise your life and the life of others each time you go behind the wheel..Take care and Drive carefully... ZooZ  |

Take your pick ... would you prefer to be hit from the side or from behind? I think from the side, there is still a better chance that you'll be able to take defensive action. From behind, there is little room to escape. |
Re: Killer road
I see no problems with the speed of traffic in dubai. Frankly, most of the accidents are caused by people not driving too fast, but people that don't know the proper ways for driving in a highway system with a 'fast left lane'
Burpusme, you sound like you've been given a shitty little rental car by your company and are angry that so many people drive SUV's here. Can you tell me exactly how an SUV affects you so badly. MJC - Never over 100 in your car. Good, then I hope you are never in the left lane, pass somebody in the left lane, or if there is no traffic, are in either of the 2 left lanes. I drive fast here. Normally on my way to work (Marina-SHJ airport in the morning, no traffic) I drive at a brisk 160. Same for the way home. Love it, gets me there and back 10-15 quicker easily over traveling 120. I drive a Jeep Cherokee. I have never had any problems with any locals or fast drivers in the FAST lane. They are courteous (flash you to tell you they are coming), in control (most of the time), and sensible. Most of the problematic drivers are 1) Indians and their like 2) Jumeirah Janes prancing along in the left lane at 100 km/h talking on the phone 3) Anybody who thinks 'oh, look there is nobody coming in the fast lane, I think i'll just hop over there because there is less traffic', then can't figure out why people who want to travel at 140-160 flash their lights at them when they are traveling the same speed as the three lanes to the right of them. I take it not many of you have driven around germany. Talk about a system that 1) Works 2) People respect 3) People know All you whiners that complain about speed...IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, STAY OUT OF THE FAST LANE. There is a reason why trucks are banned to the left two lanes, THEY ARE SLOW, if you are slow, you should be there with them. Frankly, the worst drivers I've seen around here are westerners that think they know how to drive but really don't have a clue, way worse than locals, and pretty comparable to indians. |

Doing 160miles per hour was my thing... being more educated and aware of what speed can contribute to is what my experience tought me... Slow drivers in the fast lane are not responsible drivers... nor exessively fast drivers are.. ZooZ |
Re: Killer road
TA5,
1) I bought my own "shitty little car", thankyouverymuch. 2) Please cite the bylaw that clearly and specifically states that Dubai uses a "fast left lane" system, as you describe. Let me save you the trouble -- you're not going to find it, because you're talking out of your ass. The sign says 120. Deal with it. Germany? Dubai is in Germany? Check your map, bud. 3) When you eventually crash and burn - I hope you hit a lamp pole, not any of my friends. 4) Please don't shoot the messenger - but, Jumeirah Jane and her Indian friends just sent me an SMS. They think you're an asshole.

Stay there 3) I won't hit anything, I know how to drive. 4) Good, didn't care much for them anyways. |

Re: Killer road
C'mon guys!
I can't believe we are debating whether or not it's ok to do 160kph in Dubai. It's illegal. And TA5 - sure - many locals and westerners do 160 no problem. But can they handle loss of control of vehicle at 160 - in many cases i'd doubt it....and i'd doubt it with you as well....esp in a cherokee. I would bet anything that 90% of drivers killed in high speed accidents thought they were in control 5 secs before they crashed. 90% of drivers think they're better than average - explain how that works! Also - re: germany - their licencing system is a little more rigorous than dubai's....in other words they're trained for it and obey the rules strictly. It's not one of the safest roads just because it has no speed limit. Secondly - why does everyone have this left lane = fast lane mentality. Yes the left lane is the fastest lane only because you are supposed to overtake on the left of vehicles. But you're aware the right lane has the same speed limit? What pisses me off is people that sit in the second from left lane....thinking they're no holding up traffic as not in 'fast lane'. Often I drive down to marina and the right lane is the fastest! IF YOURE NOT OVERTAKING - MOVE RIGHT....AND NOT JUST 1 LANE - KEEP MOVING RIGHT. TA5 - sometimes your posts pi.ss me off a little and that's fine - but as a road designer and engineer.....to have someone attempt to justify their breaking of the rules by saying they are a good confident driver really pi.s.ses me off. You are not the only one on the road and you can't predict the actions of others - and at 160kph...the margins for error are that much smaller. I speed from time to time as well - i'd say many people do it....but I don't have the ego and foolishness to kid myself that it is somehow right. |
