hey travellers to be!
when i went to the shops or general walking around, i used to wear a shrug or a big scarf which covered my shoulder to an extent or a t-shirt. I used to wear summer dresses with leggings. This was because i was told the less you wear the more they stare - they will stare no matter what you are wearing. when I went out to brunches, i wore strappy dresses which one was above my knee but not up my arse. Remember, they have the shops we have in England, selling the same crap, mini skirts, vest tops, very short dresses.
As for rape.... that is a rather over the top comment, you are not going to get raped for wearing a vest top and a skirt, you will get raped because the guy is a fookwhit!
just enjoy yourself while you are here, what i told my sister to bring was linen pants and tops for walking around, for interviews i wore full suit as i did during my working day - you are in air condition and its ******* freezing!
Dont stress about this too much!

I never said you would get raped if you didn't cover up. I said that not covering is likely to contribute to the frustration of some migrant workers, and one of these days someone is going to get raped.

yes and the young nationals wear it all but under their Abiyas.
[COLOR="blue"]you need to take a wrap with you when going out to dinner anyway as the restaurants are always freezing with the air con on so high.[/COLOR

Were not talking about wearing a vest top and skirt but shorts with cheeks hanging out, tops with fronts down to the waist and backs down to the builders bum. Why is it always the girls with the Michelin Tyre look who wear hipster trousers with huge overhangs?
Once had a girl come for an interview she asked who would be conducting the interview and she was given a male colleague's name. You should have seen what she wore - shoe string straps, neckline down to the waist - back & front, hemline showing tomorrows washing. This was for a recruitment position. Needless to say she didn't get the job due to in-appropriate dress.
I am not saying you have to cover up but don't flaunt it either. At a night club, restaurant or beach that is different.
You wouldn't believe how ridiculous people look visiting the DIFC complex in shorts and skimpy sun dresses and tops when everyone one else is in normal formal business attire.

Well I certainly wouldn't turn to rape. What a stupid comment. As I've said before, just because someone is showing some flesh doesn't mean they are handing it to someone on a plate, and just because someone is fed up **ck**g their workmates doesn't turn them into rapists. I fully agree with comments about dressing respectfully, I myself do, but stop branding people as rapists and sluts!

Please do not imagine that all men are capable of rape by virtue of the fact that they haven't had sex for a while.

Hmmm, many Indian women wear Sari, the traditional dress. It shows a good portion of the stomach, arms etc.
Men don't just see some skin and think 'I'm having it whether she likes it or not'.
Where do you think these men come from?? The Indians mainly come from small villages where they have never seen any part of a womans body except her hands, face and feet outside of marriage. They are never permited to be alone with a female.
They all watch MTV and see all these white western women parading about virtually naked and think we are all alike (promiscuous).
Do get real, what do you think seeing a girl/woman dressed in tiny short shorts and tight short sleeved tops walking around the streets does to them.
You are either very niave, stupid or just arrived.

There were two rapes here in Qatar that were publicized. Western women got raped. One at broad daylight, on her way home from a shopping center.
She also was beaten severely by expat workers.
I spoke to several expat workers of the same nationality of those who committed this crime. Their first question was "why doesn'
t she wear abaya"...my answer " she is western"...their reply "ahhh, she wear short skirt" my reply "no, she did not"... their answer" why was she walking"..."because the shopping center is only a short distance from her house". Their reply "no, good woman don't walk".
So, no matter what....it WILL be the woman's fault in the eyes of some men. Sadly, this type of man is rather common in the ME.
I would suggest to dress conservative. Here in Qatar it really does not make a difference, as women of any age and any stage of dress or undress are stared at...not so much by locals, but by expat workers.
I usually act as if I take a picture of them...makes them scatter rather speedily...lol
