So does the prediction game end for the group stage and a new game begin for the knock out rounds? Is there a group winner declared and then everyone starts at 0 after tomorrow?

Re: World Cup

We talked about this a few days ago and there seemed to be some agreement that we should start a new game for the knock-out rounds (mainly to try to get more people involved).

I have a spreadsheet ready, if people are interested in playing.

And yes, there will be a list of the current entrants (presented in a sorted order (or two)) posted after the final matches tomorrow. Personally, I think it's the journey (not the destination) that counts, especially as there is no prize (unless Novo is keeping the prize secret until the 'winner' is announced).

For the knock-out rounds, hopefully someone will take on the role of "impresario" and try to motivate, manipulate, mesmerize as many forum members into playing as possible. I don't mind doing the spreadsheet stuff, but if someone wants to take on the role of "chief marketing officer and general keeper-in-line of stuff and rule explainer" then please stick yer hand up!

You're doing a fine job. Unless you're cheating,

I don't know if he is cheating but it had crossed my mind that Greenhill using his brilliant spreadsheet skills has devised a formula, that using powerful algorithms, takes all our scores and infinite football wisdom to churn out the optimum result for each game.

As they say knowledge is power.......

I'm actually a little embarrassed about the [small] lead I have, hopefully someone can else can go to the top with a couple of well-selected 3 pointers today..

May I just point out here that I was the only one to predict a Japanese win?

I also got the other score right. I just got the teams wrong.

Re: World Cup

I was invited explain the penalty shoot-out and sudden-death phases of the knock-out matches the other day.

Easiest way to do this, I thought, was to open up youtube and search for "penalty shootout" (which I did and promptly clicked on the first link). My mistake, while trying to keep a brave face and explain the rules I had to sit there and watch England lose to Portugal again :(

Statistically speaking, it's should be our turn to win on penalties. I hear Defoe & company have been practising penalty kicks.

I'm hoping they've also been practising that other thing they have to do well too, er, what's it called, oh, that's it... "passing".
