It's probably not a full-time income, but a nice sideline is creaming off the sign-up offers from bookies:

it's pretty much risk-free so long as you follow the rules and most of them will let you open accounts from Canada. It's probably made me around $70,000 over two-and-a-half years, but that's in addition to the day job. It's also tax-free, both in England and in Canada.

We probably need more info about you...
- are you bilingual?
- any kind of journalism/writing background?
Company I work for contracts work out to web content writers (people who write the content for clients websites when they can be bothered to do it themselves) and translators (needed to write the "other" language content for multi-lingual websites). Its work-from-home kind of stuff

You're a Chartered Accountant, aren't you, Mike? Perhaps you could write ebooks on tax and other topics that people would find useful. You could then sell them online.
Alternatively, perhaps you could write an ebook on an interest or hobby that you have.
I'm seriously looking into doing that myself. I have been doing a lot of research into how I would go about doing that. The best "how to" website that I have found -- and it's head and shoulders above the others that I've discovered -- is Profit Lance.
It sounds as if you've done a bit of research into this topic yourself. Your original post seems to indicate an awareness of some of the hurdles and dead ends that one can run into.
In researching how to make money online, I've found that there are heaps of people out there selling educational products on this topic. Their offerings vary enormously in price. They go all the way from around $30 for an ebook that addresses just one element of the online marketing process to around $2,000 for purportedly comprehensive home study courses to $10,000 for in-person workshops.
The weird thing about it is that it is very difficult to tell which product delivers value for money and which product has a slick marketing campaign more than anything else.
Often an online marketer advertises a supposedly comprehensive home study course but, when you get into it, you discover that, to really get up and running, you need this or that add on or upgrade (an add on or upgrade that the original marketer of course is only too happy to offer you at an amazing discount of ....... ) Well, you get the picture.
I have just started studying the material on the Profit Lance website. It is laid out very clearly. I quickly skipped through it to see what was included. From what I can tell, it has every instruction one could possibly need to take an online marketing business from cradle to grave. The author, Mike Andrews, claims that, once you have paid the $77 for his online course, you will not need to buy any further instructional materials. My initial navigation through his website seems to confirm that claim.
In fact, it is going to take me weeks, if not months, to absorb all of the information on Andrews' website. But the good part about it is that he lays out the information in the order in which the reader needs it. There are some basic things one needs to know in order to get started. Then, once one is up and running, there are additional things one can do to optimise one's marketing campaign.
I want to emphasize that I have nothing to gain from mentioning this website. I am not receiving any kind of kickback from the author.
Also, while the material on the website looks good to me so far, I have not actually created an online marketing business yet. When I'm further into the process, I'll be in a better position to report how much money I'm actually making from it.

I did that for a while. Eventually it got to the point where banks wouldn't give me any more credit cards because I already had £50k of credit and never paid any interest or fees. It was fun while it lasted, but the bookie thing generally provides much better returns on your investment - up to a point.

A woman with whom I had a particularly squalid affair worked from home as a medical insurance claim coder. Boxes of medical claim forms arrived by UPS and she would type the content into an internet based application encrypting the data as she went. This required a computer, high speed internet and the ability to remember a great number of medical terms and their equivalent codes. The money was pretty good but to her, and the other occupants of her house, the big draw was that working from home meant not having to pass a piss test; Amy Winehouse and Pete Doherty could work in this field.
Where do I apply? You can also work from home doing clinical coding for CIHI I think

I certainly saved a lot of money. When you add it altogether like Tesco and other online shopping codes you can do well out of it, but like you say the more involved stuff was very helpful too.

Thanks for all the posts made so far. I have had a busy last few days but will go over them all on the weekend. Maybe others here can profit also as we all know there is never enough money in the bank.

I know of & met a couple of Ebay millionaires....

And if you have the interest, there is always spreadbetting and sharetrading but it does require discipline and patience.
