When i fight in the gym, it just wouldn't be the same if they lured an unsuspecting member of the public, blind folded, in front of me.

Unless it was Chuck Norris ;)

Giraffes don't really seem the typical quarry for big game hunting to us but I suppose in Africa some do. It does look creepy but I doubt that a scrap of meat gets wasted out there.
I agree with el-richo about truck hunters but not about ambushing prey from cover. If I'm going to shoot an animal I'd rather get a standing shot within range. Some troll started a thread in TIO about deer hunting and insisted that creeping through the woods was the only credible way to do it. Whoever it was didn't hunt and didn't know much about deer but they set up the thread just to do some hunter bashing. I wasn't the only one from here who was ambushed. I have a friend out in Sundrie who was a famous big game hunter and warden and next time I talk to him I'll ask about giraffes. Even though he's in his 80's he still leads safaris but these days they're photo safaris. The last hunting one, (for leopard) was about 4 years ago. He has 2 photo safaris booked for this year.

Why on earth would anyone want to hunt leopard? I am disgusted by the whole thing.

Same reason they hunt bear and rhinocerous and lions and all the rest I imagine.

I am no more disgusted by the idea than I am by MMA cage fights to be honest, i couldnt believe that was considered "entertainment" when I stumbled upon it while channel hopping through 70 chanels of cable TV crap back in the late 90s, and now its considered almost mainstream entertainment...

Each to their own I guess.

Two consenting adults testing themselves against another, seems fine to me. I admit it would be different if they had a fighter in the octagon all ready to go and his/her opponent was a 12 year old kid who was lured in there with a free donut and a PS3. Or if the fighter drove around in his pick-up, jumping out and kicking the shit out of an innocent bystander when they saw one.

MMA fighting is no offensive than Boxing, Muay Thai, Ice Hockey, Rugby Union, or people who play the saxophone.

Why would you have to be a vegan to find hunting barbaric?
You can feel Ok about eating meat based on the assumption that its killed in a humane and ethical way..

And why is it difficult to accept that hunting as a sport is a simple gratification of some of our more basic primitive urges..
Urges that some will find primitive enough to consider barbaric (relating to, or characteristic of barbarians. or marked by crudeness or lack of restraint in taste, style, or manner)

Wow. Where did I say anything that makes you think you know my thoughts on hunting. You don't.

How do you know that the meat you are eating has come from an animal that has been killed in a humane and ethical way?

To be honest I based my idea of your thoughts on your presumption that somebody’s diet would be based on their opinion of somebody else’s hobby

You are aware that abattoirs in North America need to meet minimum government standards in converting animals into meat products, part of those standards cover how those animals are killed and its expected it to be humane and ethical
How humane and how ethcial may be up for debate, but for sure its not considered inhumane and unethical

You presume incorrectly.

I think the main contention is not that animals meet their demise in order to feed people, but the fact that people kill for their own amusement.

Using that logic would you disapprove of an abattoirist cracking a few jokes at work?

Like this one?

How can you tell if a castle has turrets?

It keeps screaming, "piss, shit, bollocks, I'm a castle"

Unless you consider transporting live animals to the abattoir inhumane and unethical. Some do.

I would have imagined that someone with very strong opinion on hunting (barbaric) would also be very concerned on where their animal products came from and how the animals are treated. You are correct that there are minimum standards. You say "or sure its not considered inhumane and unethical" who exactly considers them not inhumane and unethical? And how do they know?
