I'll happily look at his view point. I've already said that these were things discussed around a court case, that I was a witness to. My friends had lots and lots of information, it was a hot topic of conversation, many times. I didn't do my due diligence and fact check everything, I didn't feel the need to at the time. There were some shocking facts that stuck with me. How right or wrong they were is open to debate, but don't be rude about it. (Sorry if my response came across as a telegram, at least I was polite) Facts are in fact not open to debate. If the topic really interests you and you have the time, you could even use google scholar to access the primary literature. This is what my "views" are based on. Although what I said is not a view, but a fact. |

Since it's blindingly obvious that you didn't understand the telegram remark, what was being hinted at is the slight possibility that googling something along the lines of "EREOI wind turbines" would take a couple of milliseconds and enlighten you.

Some people attract rudeness more than others. |

No, hence the word "estimated".

Forgive my skepticism, but I expect, for example, Volkswagen would "estimate" the life of their vehicles in decades. It don't make it so.

No disputing of this fact though. |

No disputing of this fact though. The category includes posters who are unnecessarily argumentative but poorly informed on their topic, as well as people who think they're "debating" when they're actually just picking a fight. |
Re: wind farms, pros and cons, love or hate?
Please note that this is not an anti-British, or Irish republican motivated post....but please read on.
Proposals are well under way to construct up to 2,600 (some reports mention more, some less, but close enough) wind turbines in the midlands counties of Ireland (those counties with no Government Cabinet minister as an elected representative), each one to be 185m tall (the tallest in Europe - although some reports say they will be the tallest turbines in the world, but approximately one third of the height of the CN tower) to produce electricity "almost exclusively" for export to the UK, as the UK won't have them! I am advised that this number is approximately three times the TOTAL number of wind turbines already situated in the whole of mainland UK, most of which are considerably lower in height than these, but where no developments of this kind are now permitted. House prices are predicted to fall by 50 to 80% depending on proximity, but due to the MASSIVE size and concentration of these, it would be difficult to not be directly affected. The "flicker" effect would be present miles away, not to mention the "infrasound" (not my word, but it describes the constant whooshing and humming noise) effects. The companies behind it are approaching local farmers individually, and offering them a few grand for an "option" to locate turbines on their land, and if that goes ahead, they are promised around 25k per annum rent for the duration. But they are also bound to strict confidentiality "gagging orders" prohibiting them from discussing the deal with anyone else, including their neighbours, so everyone is pitted against everyone else and communities are split. Part of the anti-wind farm meeting I attended showed similar (but nowhere the same scale) experiences in New Zealand, Australia and Ontario, and in all cases, the industry (aptly described as not wind farmers, but subsidy farmers, because of the HUGE amounts of money involved) spokesmen claimed there were no ill effects for local residents, or that noise levels were "within the permitted limits". Note the tobacco industry's claims decades ago. I appreciate that this is a British expats forum, but does this seem fair or right on any level? Apart from the British government trying to "dump" its growing energy problem on Ireland (NIMBYism at its worst!), WTF has got into the Irish government whereby it has pulled down Ireland's pants and bent over to allow this to be even considered! Beware....it could be coming to a location near you!! |

Re: wind farms, pros and cons, love or hate?
The piece on the BBC says they have to be very tall because they're planning to build them where it's not windy.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-21147279 I would not have thought of placing a wind farm in a place where it's not windy. Perhaps they could get a subsidy to do some deep sea fishing there too. |

The only people I know that object to these sits are those with risk to there property values, and notably its higher value country properties FWIW I used to live near to one of the wind farms in South Wales, no hum, no flicker, didn’t bother the sheep and didn’t see an abundance of dead birds or bats either Been close to the big wind farms in the US and western Canada too, didn’t the hear the hum or see the flicker either… And locally around where I live the fashion is solar farms, I’m also aware that some people are complaining about those as a blot on the landscape.. But whilst you posting on an internet forum, you’re using power and as a result clearly suffering from NIMBY’ism |
Re: wind farms, pros and cons, love or hate?
What's the beef with solar farms?
No more obtrusive than acres of polytunnels, silent operation, less traffic than if the land was farmed...? |
