It's a documentary programme (has good stuff most times). The show in question is on CBC this evening in Toronto at 9pm. You should check channel and time in your area.

When I lived In Ireland there were several turbines put up about a mile, mile and a half away. They were at the top end of the hills that eventually went down to Bantry Bay and you could see the bay from the turbine site. We would often take a walk through the woods to get up close to the turbines. They were actually quite amazing to stand beneath, and nowhere near as noisy as some would have us believe. We could sit out on our patio and see the tops of about 4 or 5 turbines spin, and found it quite relaxing to do so. I also had a small turbine at home, linked in with some solar too.
As for my opinions on views, they are more pleasing to the eye than open pit mines, nuclear reactors and the oil sands. We also have to move on from the reliance on oil for some of it's uses, it will run out one day and we need to plan ahead. As for the bird/bat issue, we heard the same arguments when the turbines were proposed. I can't say with any authority that they do, or don't kill, large numbers of birds but we never saw any evidence of any kills around the site. I think there would be more birds killed flying into windows across towns, or from cat predation. But the worst is that when I see it or hear it I am reminded that I am paying for it to be there as well in the extra levy on my electric bills and THAT REALLY HURTS. Without the subsidies they would not exist. I hope that Canada does not go the way of the UK in this one. |

We are still in Wales waiting to move over to BC in April - we have too many windfarms in Wales - they are noisy, not when you are up close to them its when you live some distance away - we are approx half a mile and when the wind blows through the windfarm the noise hits the gable end of our stone house and reverberates around the stable yard. There are many different noises that come from windfarms, mechanical noises like street sweeping machines, wooshing noise of the blades cutting through the air, vibration type sound - many many variations depending on the weather conditions. There is also light flicker if the sun shines through the windfarm as the blades turn and then also tv and radio interference. A neighbour of mine hasn't had radio and tv reception since the windfarm went up over 12 years ago.

There is an application in to build three wind turbines about a mile outside the village and a public meeting was held a couple of days ago.
There was a cabaret involving a very agitated local woman who shouted at the representatives and blew a whistle repeatedly, apparently indicating that she was blowing the whistle on their lies. Another man shouted incoherently then many people joined in. The shouters had no evidence to back up their worries about 'waves coming through their houses', about excess noise, health damage, effects on house prices. I went along to ask about the possible danger to the local osprey population and other wild life and came away reasonably satisfied. Now I have looked for real evidence of health hazards but all the articles seem to hinge on secret documents that various authorities are withholding. What are your opinions, knowledge, experiences? I know dbd hates them with a passion. I quite like the look of them and hate seeing fields of solar panels, or even those individual ones stuck in back yards. Anyway , here I am wanting to knowmore The turbines give out a low hum. They also have a squeak, and in high winds in the right direction, they periodically "boom" - all of which is very irritating. I can tune out the first 2, but the boom happens several times a night and literally "bumps" you awake, if you can get back to sleep, you still feel sleep deprived in the morning. All the household suffers at the same time, you can compare clocks! The actual noise isn't half as bad as the atmospheric noise they give out in the form of vibrations is really unbearable. Itchy ears, the hairs on your arms vibrating like you have spiders webs on them, an elevated heart rate (your heart tries to synchronize with the rhythm of the turbines which is faster than normal, leaving one feeling anxious - just like the dramatic music in a horror movie) Not all wind farms behave like this, certainly, layout, wind directions and topography all contribute differently, however, without living with it for a month to experience the effects of the farm on the property you have, I wouldn't risk living anywhere near one. Finally, new research is coming through all the time about heart problems, stress levels, headaches, internal hemorrhaging in birds and animals near farms, I wouldn't be surprised that in 20 years, they weren't allowed to be within 2 miles of any residences. |

The effort of manufacture and expected life of them, outweighs the benefits of them even at full production. Plus they perform at far less than predicted values, and without looking it up, they are only producing about 50% of their estimated production. Wind farms (particularly in Britain) are not as green as you'd like or expect, and with the government subsidies that have been thrown at energy companies and landowners the "green issue" has been wildly exaggerated because the fiscal returns are so great. |

From an environmental POV is wind/solar can never produce enough energy for Ontario and nuclear power will still be needed then why bother with the turbines? There's another proposal for a relatively local site, well relative to me that is. They want to use a disused mine to produce power. This one will create jobs and has local support http://www.thestar.com/business/2011...n_marmora.html http://www.marmoraandlake.ca/94/images/mine.water.jpg |

The noise can be awful, but the health concerns that are coming forward are more worrying. not all wind farms are equal for noise or other problems, but I wouldn't risk living close, and in real terms, the environmentally friendly stance isn't all that it's made out to be.
