Thanks Rob4bc and Manghams.
If I had got 'We'll let you know', instead of 'I look forward to working with you and will call you on Thursday afternoon.' I wouldn't expect anything.
Oh well, it just means there is something better around the corner........maybe hubby will back me on opening a fudge shop after all

Oh well fudge shop on hold.....Just been offered a seasonal position with a view to make it permanent in Feb. That'll do for now
Gives me some Crimbo cash and an easy out if I don't like it - then maybe next summer off for the next lot of visitors......Mind you if it's MIL again, I'll have extra shifts and a second job please

I take this is the phone call you were waiting for just a day late.

Initially I had an informal visit, and was told that most people get taken on as casual to start with then often a temporary post before a permanent one was offered. She said I should shadow someone for a day or two before I could enlist as casual staff. She would arrange this.
Then I heard nothing, and eventually called to see when this might be set up and was informed I'd need a host of vaccinations before even being allowed to shadow, so off I trotted and got them.
Then I heard nothing. I called again, and was told with little apology that I had "kept ending up down her to-do list as she was so busy". Then she set up a shadow time for me. This was cancelled the day before as the staff member was "too busy" as they were short-staffed!
I had to get earning so I reluctantly applied for another temporary post (in home care) and was offered the job immediately .... when could I start! Just after I accepted, the original girl calls me and asks if I could cover somebody who was going on leave for three weeks the next month, so I explained that I was now unable. I got the impression that she was rather annoyed at me!

So I worked to the end of the temporary post, and when that finished, Home Care said they didn't want to lose me, but were unable to offer me more work at that time, so I took a job elsewhere.
This summer a vacancy arose in the original place, so I applied. I got a nice letter back thanking me for my application and saying that the position had already been filled, but did they have my permission to hold my application for subsequent upcoming positions. I thanked them for their response, thinking that I was certainly in with a good chance of working there soon.
When the next vacancy arose, I applied, having checked that my previous application was no longer valid, which surprised me. I heard nothing.
I have since applied to two further vacancies without even an acknowledgment! I have faxed and written directly to the head of department and gone through HR, and am now at a loss.
I am confused and frustrated. Have I been blacklisted? What the hell is going on? I wish they would even just reply and tell me not to bother applying for any more posts ..... at least that way I could draw a line under it and move on!
Also the place I am working currently SUCKS!
I am not a happy bunny.
Sorry for the rant.

Morwenna, sorry to hear your having a tough time - keep your chin up!
I hope they are nice people to Manghams - I also hope what they told me during the interview wasn't fairy tales too

This is happening to me too. There's a rehab program in Foothills hospital which I have wanted to work at since I first got here.

Sorry for the rant.I good old rant can be cathartic; especially when everything in the garden is not so rosey.

Is ther some other place to try so you dont have put yourself through that again?

If you can't go in a stright line - go round (though often round the bend!!)

Keep looking

)And as far as I can tell I have every qualification and experience they would look for.
The thing that might count against me, apart from the fact that was not able to help them out when they wanted me to, is that I am not currently employed by Calgary Health Region, therefore coming through as an external applicant, even though I was previously employed by the region and only moved on as there were no current opportunities that suited.......
I wish I knew what the block was, then I'd know if it was something I can do something about.
Maybe someone up there doesn't like me? .... perhaps they are fed up with me applying? Could be they just will always take an internal applicant over an external one .... I could take another temporary home care job or something (they keep asking me to go back, but homecare is no picnic either...) but at least I'd maybe be in the system.
Thanks for the sympahy anyway.

Sigh. Thing is, I think I'd really like to work there ..... (though it is starting to occur to me to wonder just why vacancies come up so often!

if that is the position you'd really like to have ,would it be worse seeing the first woman you dealt with and explaining the whole situation to her?may be there was a break in communication somewhere and just sort of trying again with all the facts could help??????????
good luck
