Maybe we are not consistent, but hey, guess what, you get what you pay for, and we do the best we can. I think (hope) that by now most people on here know what to expect from us. Just go by the "Golden Rule", treat others as you would wish to be treated, and you wont go far wrong, save anything else for Facebook. I wouldnt wish to be called a tosser, so that's my moral reference in this sort of thing.

i give up. i thought i put my argument to you very respectfully given your job on here and this is what i get back. as i say my defence is if the o/p starts along this vein they should expect to receive what they give. you have taken what was a general thought and opinion personally and overreacted, and for which i suppose i am now going to get a ban. i don't want to be called a whinging pom, but that does not seem to matter.

are moderators not capable of accepting some constructive criticism? or are we all supposed to cower in fear at the thought of upsetting you?

I know yeah, draconian or what. I agree with you rae, you were respectful and that term "whingeing pohm" is an offensive term and I don't blame you if you don't like it being hurled at you, not even in a general way.

Therefore it was directed to the whole board, does that make it any better? That it was against everyone, all of us here because we of British extraction?

Well, the OP did want to give us something to real moan about. Though I'm not sure how an incoherent rant on the internet counts as real. Anyway - don't you have some coppers codes such as charlie foxtrot for complete f***wit; try using those as insults instead.

One of your colleagues deleted a thread several years ago. The reason given?

"Tosser"

Whinging pom is often just a gentle ribbing between nations of the same race (like Aussie convict) where <the removed term> is often based in racism rather than micky taking nationalism. IMO, the two shouldn't be equated. But then, I would say that as I am an Aussie :)

Rae, i think a simple change of wording would suffice, given the feedback you've been given. Something like - "People who create threads of this nature are tossers".

This does not single out a poster. It is merely a generalisation such as, for example, directing the comment, "whinging, whinning, limey, poms and luddites" to the users of an internet forum.

So what's the difference between calling a person from Australia an "Aussie", a British person a "Brit", or a person from Pakistan a "Paki"?

Surely they're all just shortened versions of their country of origin and should cause no offence?

As I recall from trips to SE Asia, newspapers routinely use "Pak".

I deleted a post where you called the OP a tosser. That is all I did. I didnt close the thread, I didnt delete your later remarks:rolleyes:

As you probably know by now, if you want to give constructive criticism then private messaging is the accepted medium, not posting on the forum.

It was not PERSONAL, and no one saw fit to report it... I didnt take offence at it, although I did observe that no good would come of it. Somehow I suspect if the mods had dissapeared it then there would have been far more wringing of hands anyway. Damned if we do , damned if we dont.

Anyway, there has been more than enough discussion of moderation on this thread, if you lot want to defend yourselves from the scurrilous accusations against you go ahead, but leave us mods out of it now.

Nothing wrong with it if an Australian says it because in Australia it always has just been a shortening....like we shorten all words....but in the UK the term Paki has been hijacked and taken on a much more sinister race based tone with a lot of British...so is best avoided there IMO....but then I'm not British so you lot may know more about it...

IMO it should be avoided in Canada also. Regardless of its origins, it is now a racist word almost in the same realm as the N word. Non Pakistanis use it as a word used to denigrate and has no place in the lexicon of an educated society.

Interestingly, i personally hear the term used much more frequently from non white British people.
