what's wrong with you lot?

this'll be a good one....can't wait for the replies! give all you whinging, whinning, limey, poms and luddites something to real moan about....

i've not been on ex-pats for a long time and it appears to be for good reason! are your lives that dull and uninteresting, that all you've got left to do in life is to moan.....especially the lot who are fortunate enough to get to the point where alot of you would like to be....IN CANADA......

moaning about the olympics for starters! good lordy guys...one of the best shows on earth, fun, mostly free, happy un-troubled times, gold after gold, amazing weather, no bombs, a little light hearted drunkeness etc etc and all you can do is bemoan.....

bugger off back to the UK.....maybe the 2012 olympics is more up your street? yobs, booze, drugs...oh! bad sportsmanship to boot....

good luck.

I'll give you whinging and whinning, even limey and poms. But luddites - I think you'd best go and look that one up in a dictionary.

I agree with what you say but unfortunately hypocrisy reared it's head within your last paragraph :p

And as Alan suggests, you may want to look up the meaning of luddite ;)

I was pondering this the other day: Canada has turned me into a Luddite. At least as far as cellphones are concerned. The enormous costs of receiving and making calls, data transmission etc. means that I have no interest in having the latest smartphone here, whereas I would in the UK. This whole mobile connectivity phenomen is passing me by........

Wholly agree. I just want a phone that makes and receives calls. The only gizmo I need with it is GSM. I don't want text messaging, GSM, games, internet.......

I had a brief flirtation with text messaging but, now that I have a Crackberry, it's easier to use email all the time. Voice and text have fallen by the wayside.

Your point may have had a little more resonance had you peppered your post with the correct capitalisation rather than saving it all for three words..

Perhaps you previously lived in a country where being able to write like an adult was considered "cool" & now you find yourself in an area where basic literacy is not considered as vital.. Should this be the case then well done..

I would also like to congratulate you on your appreciation of lighthearted drunkenness, I'm sure everyone lucky enough to witness your mildly intoxicated japery delighted in your hilarious antics.. It's so sad that the Brits resort to using "booze" to achieve the same euphoria..

Free? There is a $6Bn cost to build and host that someone has to pay for, and tickets for the events were far from free unless you happen to be the chairman of coca cola or some similar sponsoring multinational!

Someone told me the cheapest tickets for the hockey started at $800... not sure if thats true or not though. I do know they werent free though!

I dont think its nearly as clear cut as that!

Price Waterhouse Coopers

added up the incremental impact of the 2010 Vancouver Games and the incremental impact of the Vancouver Convention Centre. The totals vary with the measuring period from $6.1 billion in the period from 2008 to 2014 to $10.7 billion when the period is expanded to cover from 2002 to 2020.
TV and sponsorship income

Bell Canada committed $200 million and entered into a joint venture with Rogers Communications Inc. to acquire broadcast rights to both the 2010 Winter Games and the 2012 Summer Games in London for $153 million.

VANOC got other commitments as well: $110 million from RBC Financial Group that includes $70 million in cash, $62.5 million from Petro-Canada, $53 million from General Motors of Canada, and $100 million in goods and services including team and volunteer uniforms from Hudson’s Bay Company.

Thats about $600-700M

NBC paid $850M for broadcast rights, and I expect is the biggest bidder, just another $5 billion to find then...they probably have that down the back of the couch right?

The downturn killed the corporate sales, they had 75 $145k primo hospitality packages including tickets to all events, but they sold only 25, they had $285k corporate packages... I wonder how many of those they sold?

Just like the 1976 games in Montreal. According to the then mayor Jean Drapeau, they "could no more cost money than a man can have a baby". The tax payers will be footing the residual bill for the next 30 years.

It didnt seem to be directed at any one named or implied individual, so its hard to see it as a direct personal attack, even if it was shit disturbing to some extent.

If I applied the rules stricktly there would be little left to read here I suspect, I mostly just dont want people name calling or picking fights with each other.

without 'insult' OR personal attack, i think is the key bit.

like i say i'm not trying to be clever, its simply a case of either a more liberal interpretation of the rules, in which case these threads will appear and then the o/p should expect to receive what he gives, or they don't appear at all.
now i'm for the former, i agree with you, there will not be much left otherwise, but i would ask for some consistency thats all. what seems to happen is that some things are let go and others not so much, this can get a little confusing where it is only sometimes that the rules are strictly applied.

Rae, engage your brain, there is a difference between an untargeted general lashing out, and calling someone a tosser. Ive no wish to close every contentious thread on sight, and I dont read all the threads all the time, nor do I wish to, but if you think Im going to ignore it when you call someone a tosser if I see it, then you are mistaken.

Maybe we are not consistent, but hey, guess what, you get what you pay for, and we do the best we can. I think (hope) that by now most people on here know what to expect from us. Just go by the "Golden Rule", treat others as you would wish to be treated, and you wont go far wrong, save anything else for Facebook. I wouldnt wish to be called a tosser, so that's my moral reference in this sort of thing.

"whingeing pohm" was a real term of abuse and prejudice. My Dad emigrated to Australia in his mid twenties and said that term was used very derogatorily towards Brits (even if you weren't whingeing and obviously they weren't "pohms").

Re Iaink's post # 19

:

The figures you quote are for increased revenues as a result of the Olympic spending and infrastructure, not costs.

The BC Government originally budgeted $600m towards the games. This increased to $780m with the increased security costs. I guess we will find out sometime what the actual spend was. Whatever it was, the real question is what amount of the increased revenues sticks with the BC Government. Then it is possible to calculate if it was a good investment or not.

As for the hockey tickets, I don't have the exact prices to hand but they started under $100.

i give up. i thought i put my argument to you very respectfully given your job on here and this is what i get back. as i say my defence is if the o/p starts along this vein they should expect to receive what they give. you have taken what was a general thought and opinion personally and overreacted, and for which i suppose i am now going to get a ban. i don't want to be called a whinging pom, but that does not seem to matter.

are moderators not capable of accepting some constructive criticism? or are we all supposed to cower in fear at the thought of upsetting you?

I know yeah, draconian or what. I agree with you rae, you were respectful and that term "whingeing pohm" is an offensive term and I don't blame you if you don't like it being hurled at you, not even in a general way.

Whinging pom is often just a gentle ribbing between nations of the same race (like Aussie convict) where <the removed term> is often based in racism rather than micky taking nationalism. IMO, the two shouldn't be equated. But then, I would say that as I am an Aussie :)

Rae, i think a simple change of wording would suffice, given the feedback you've been given. Something like - "People who create threads of this nature are tossers".

This does not single out a poster. It is merely a generalisation such as, for example, directing the comment, "whinging, whinning, limey, poms and luddites" to the users of an internet forum.

So what's the difference between calling a person from Australia an "Aussie", a British person a "Brit", or a person from Pakistan a "Paki"?

Surely they're all just shortened versions of their country of origin and should cause no offence?

So what's the difference between calling a person from Australia an "Aussie", a British person a "Brit", or a person from Pakistan a "Paki"?

Surely they're all just shortened versions of their country of origin and should cause no offence?

As I recall from trips to SE Asia, newspapers routinely use "Pak".

are moderators not capable of accepting some constructive criticism? or are we all supposed to cower in fear at the thought of upsetting you?

I deleted a post where you called the OP a tosser. That is all I did. I didnt close the thread, I didnt delete your later remarks:rolleyes:

As you probably know by now, if you want to give constructive criticism then private messaging is the accepted medium, not posting on the forum.
