Re: What Car???

Having decided not to buy a Fiat 500 I've been working on finding something else. Managed to persuade the OH to go and look at a 2004 Jaguar XJR. (I should point out we dont actually drive anywhere, so this will be more of something for me to polish and take out on sunny days with other old men). What an amazing car, even the OH liked it. 400 HP, supercharged and $105,000 CDN new! I am currently negotiating...

Did someone just mention midlife crisis?

Are you by chance planning to conduct any 1970s style bank robberies to ameliorate your midlife crisis?

A commendable and extremely eco-friendly choice.

So long as you stick to the not-driving-it policy.

In your tender care it'll be in a sort of quarantine and thus I applaud your willingness to invest tens of thousands of dollars in the future of the planet.

Well done sir.

You haven't seen how many trees and animals gave their lives for the interior.

I actually figure if I don't drive it then nothing can break, which seems like a sensible approach.

Still in negotiations, I think the seller is having to come to terms with what depreciation really means.

OK then: as an investment it's likely not a stupid one (if the price is right).

I have a friend (a very old one who I worked with in California way back then) who bought a 1953 (?) D-type for not very much then renovated it for a lot more.

The only problem is that at your age you won't live to see a profit. Ah well.

Is this true or just your opinion. If true then please provide the empirical evidence to so support. If it's your opinion then we can assume it has absolutely no validity whatsoever and chuck it into the garbage bin, where your other such posts (movies, music, television) about the USA belong.

It has its basis in truth. At one point N American cars were really bad and some still aren't that great. It's a question of knowing which are the good ones (mainly European based) and which aren't. They also have been good in the past of dumding down cars, eg the old Escort, which was a fair car in the UK but a complete POS over here, it's all done in the name of cost cutting and providing a car which the manufacturers 'think' that the public want. Obviously they haven't got it right until recently as can be seen by the massive swing towards the Jap stuff in the last 10-15 years. All depends what you want really? Tell me what sort of vehicle you're after and you'll get some suggestions.

European ones should be hitting the dealers this spring.
