Re: What Car???

What would you get if you werent coming to Canada? No reason to choose anything different, although there may be "domestic" branded things here you wont be familiar with.

Just because you can choose the 2 ton 18MPG 4x4 SUV that has its own post code doesnt mean you have to. But if you want to tow a horse trailer and move 3 kids and 2 large dogs around it may be a necessary evil. Likewise you might want a mid life crisis 500BHP Mustang, but it might be overkill.

What are your preferences? Diesel is not a common option here unfortunately.

With hindsite I would buy something dirt cheap and only insure it for the bare minimum, with a large excess. At least for a year or two anyway. Anything newish is going to cost thousands to insure as fully comp becomes a more attractive option.

Shuddit pimp my elantra man.

What car is almost as an emotive issue as 'Where should I live?'. Buy what you would drive at home/fits your lifestyle as the doughty Mr K says. Or at least define that for us & we can provide more directed advice, critiscm and opnion.;)

My Subaru Legacy is an american made car. Its suffers from none of those problems. Neither does my Canadian made Honda.

The irony is half those "american" chevies and pontiacs that used to suffer those symptoms are not american made at all.

Until a year or so ago I'd agree with you. However Cruze, Focus, Fusion, Taurus etc are all good vehicles.

That's hardly the point is it? Any muppet can bolt together a car. The "American cars" are still designed and sourced by Americans. Therefore, they'll be crap.

Most of the badge engineered Korean and Chinese made GM imports started life as european designs.

US designed and built cars like the Taurus (Volvo platform), Focus (European), Fusion (Mazda 6), Pontiac G8 (Holden) etc then?

There is so much plaform sharing now that it may be pointless to even try and make a distinction. I suppose a few things are pure US... Mustang, Camaro, Challenger etc... I wouldnt mind taking my chances there if someone else would drive the kids to school and pay for the gas:D

All 3 of those are remarkably good, well the Mustang and Camaro anyway, Challenger has a bit of catching up to do. Have spent the last year or so fitting superchargers to all of these.

Pity about the G8, here's hoping they bring it back.

The Amercian focus is not the same as the European one..in fact its a bag of spanners when you compare the two..even Ford dealerships admit this.

They have to keep the price down over here so they make it with cheap parts.

The new Focus just coming out is the European one, well most of it anyway.

Having decided not to buy a Fiat 500 I've been working on finding something else. Managed to persuade the OH to go and look at a 2004 Jaguar XJR. (I should point out we dont actually drive anywhere, so this will be more of something for me to polish and take out on sunny days with other old men). What an amazing car, even the OH liked it. 400 HP, supercharged and $105,000 CDN new! I am currently negotiating...

Are you by chance planning to conduct any 1970s style bank robberies to ameliorate your midlife crisis?

A commendable and extremely eco-friendly choice.

So long as you stick to the not-driving-it policy.

In your tender care it'll be in a sort of quarantine and thus I applaud your willingness to invest tens of thousands of dollars in the future of the planet.

Well done sir.

You haven't seen how many trees and animals gave their lives for the interior.

I actually figure if I don't drive it then nothing can break, which seems like a sensible approach.

Still in negotiations, I think the seller is having to come to terms with what depreciation really means.

OK then: as an investment it's likely not a stupid one (if the price is right).

I have a friend (a very old one who I worked with in California way back then) who bought a 1953 (?) D-type for not very much then renovated it for a lot more.

The only problem is that at your age you won't live to see a profit. Ah well.
