What would you get if you werent coming to Canada? No reason to choose anything different, although there may be "domestic" branded things here you wont be familiar with.
Just because you can choose the 2 ton 18MPG 4x4 SUV that has its own post code doesnt mean you have to. But if you want to tow a horse trailer and move 3 kids and 2 large dogs around it may be a necessary evil. Likewise you might want a mid life crisis 500BHP Mustang, but it might be overkill.
What are your preferences? Diesel is not a common option here unfortunately.
With hindsite I would buy something dirt cheap and only insure it for the bare minimum, with a large excess. At least for a year or two anyway. Anything newish is going to cost thousands to insure as fully comp becomes a more attractive option.

Shuddit pimp my elantra man.
What car is almost as an emotive issue as 'Where should I live?'. Buy what you would drive at home/fits your lifestyle as the doughty Mr K says. Or at least define that for us & we can provide more directed advice, critiscm and opnion.
