Yep this morning we were awakened by the phone. We have had some devastating news. My MIL was killed in a car accident this morning. So the panicky trying to find flights and not knowing when anything is actually happening thing has been going on today. Then of course there is the guilt of not being closer and not being able to get there sooner. Earliest flight is Wednesday, so hubby is taking that and daughter and I will follow on a few days later - unless it all happens sooner than that, then we all fly out together.
Both my hubby's boss and my boss have been fabulouus with offers of rides to the airport etc.
Probably won't be around to much in the next couple of weeks. So I'll see you all soon.

Thank you all for your thoughts.
Hubby is flying on Wednesday, daughter and I will follow on when we know more, that way his Dad doesn't get overwhelmed with so many people invading his space and OH and his Dad can get some stuff sorted out. We are pretty sure that the funeral won't be until the week of the 14th or later due to the autopsy.
We have booked the flights through Sears Travel - I worked for them for a bit so they have done a blinding job and no commission.
It's a bit of a bummer really. It also means we don't get our romantic getaway to San Francisco - hey ho!

Virtual hugs to you and yours Piff. Very very sad news. Thinking of all of you

Piff - just thought of something else I could/should add - I certainly do not wish to pry - or to go into detail - but if there is to be a post mortem, try and get an indication from the police or the coroner's officer when your MIL's body will be released. There is unlikely to be a lot of contact over the weekend, I am guessing, but perhaps someone in the family could make some enqs late Monday or early Tues if no-one has heard anything.
Hopefully, everything will be straightforward and there will be no delays - but be prepared for a delay of a week or two, or more, if there is more to the case. Just one other thing to throw into the pot I'm afraid. And I only mention this for your welfare, your costs, and your leave entitlements! I'm sure everybody will be truly understanding, but your and/or your hubby might be in the UK longer than you thought. Again, thinking of you all at this time

Oh Piff I'm so sorry to hear your sad news.
I can't add anything more to what others have already said other than to say I know some of what you are feeling.
My MIL passed away while on holiday in England visiting her brother. My wife and her sister went over to arrange the funeral. I regret to this day that I was unable to go with them.
Please know that my thoughts go with you.

Thanks again all! Your kind words are really helpful at this time.
As for leave well if we use it all so be it. Both our work places have been excellent we are thinking that neither of us will get any sort of money though. FIL is speaking to a liason officer tomorrow (SUN) so hopefully we should have some info. We have found a news report on the accident but it doesn't really tell us much.
We also have some family arriving at FIL's on Monday (from Germany) so they may be able to get some more info for us too. It's the unknowing of what to do for the best you know. I don't know if it's worse because she went so sudden and not because of illness. The surreal thing is the Birthday card my daughter will open on tuesday.
