Please please please spend just five minutes to find out. This article is an excellent starting point. http://www.fastcompany.com/magazine/77/walmart.html |

You are a selling out your morals for either convenience or to save a couple of bucks. You replied two minutes after I posted. Stop posting here for five minutes and go read the god damned articles! Then come back and justify shopping there. |
Re: Wal Mart
(1) As a newbie to Canada, I can confirm that I was horrified by Walmart. I imagined it to be way better than it is in real life. It bears no relation to ASDA whatsoever IMO, it's more like Poundstretcher gone wrong.
In fairness, I didn't look too much at the food, more the non-food sections. But, quite frankly, it's all one chaotic mess anyway so it's hard to tell. I am hardly one to be able to afford morals and ethics, but I'd much rather to go a nofrills which has served me well so far. (2) Has BE introduced some sort of 'sense of humour' filter these days? |

I bet. The one I was inside was in Colombus OH. I was asked, by a Newfie, to see if they had a good price on a 3/4hp gas powered ice auger. They'd never heard of such a thing.

Re: Wal Mart
I'm not for one minute saying that I agree with the moral side of things, I was just trying to get across the fair point, that lots of people really do feel that they don't have a choice because of their finances, really it was the same in the UK, cheap shops, pound stores etc and for some people they do serve a purpose, I shop in lots of different places for different things that is all I was trying to say. There are lots of people that are living very close to poverty and they may feel that Walmart and shops like them are their only choice and they shouldn't get knocked for it!

No one has a problem with shopping in cheap shops. No Frills, mentioned above, is a sound option. Why choose WalMart?

Ive nothing against the bargain end of the market, but I do have a problem with the way Walmart in particulor chooses to operate. If you dont agree with the morals, then try and resist the temptation to shop there, its really can be as simple as that. Its might not be possible 100% of the time, but at least its better than nothing. |

No Taxis there? I often see people leaving the local No Frills by Taxi with the weekly shop.... There is even a Taxi phone in the lobby for that very reason.

Thing is if you don't drive maybe you're more likely to live in an urban area where you would have more choice of stores.
