Aside from ..had your placenta chopped up for an anti-depressant pill or smoothie... from the examples I just saw they could be members of the WI. |
Re: Vaccine/Measles etc
There's a great blog I read. I'll link when I'm at computer called " the sceptical on" who takes on these crunchy moms and crucifies then.
Its an interesting read to see some of the crap they spout |
Re: Vaccine/Measles etc
I feel like a moron, as I completely forgot about the yellow vaccination report card, and that you NEED the central database for a very obvious reason. I'm a bad, bad parent :(
Zoe, did you mean "the sceptical ob" ? (I'm reading through a few things on there about anti-vax, one being about how it's pretty much all about the parents' ego, and that sums it up very well) |
Re: Vaccine/Measles etc
another skeptical ob fan here.
i'm a reformed crunchy mum. the problem with a lot of crunchy mums is that they are quite well-educated, just not in sciences, so they tend to apply their critical thinking skills to scientific evidence instead of , well, actually learning science. some kids somewhere were injured by vacccines? OMG PROOF THAT VAXES ARE DANGEROUS. then throw in Big Pharma etc. they are kind of like conspiracy theorists. the turn around for me was reading a book about the history of the anti-vax movement and realising the antis were all either a. quacks or b. had weird political agendas. none of them were actual scientists. the other problem with crunchy mum anti-vaxers is they really do think they are smarter than everyone else, cos they've got a PHD in sociology or whatever. And they've read ALL the books (this is a standard Crunchy Mum answer if you question them on their evidence. "It's in the book. If you haven't read it, then you don't understand how you are being manipulated by Big Pharma etc") It's hard for them to admit they are ignorant but, they really, really are. Like I was. |
Re: Vaccine/Measles etc
I'm a Public Health Nurse, and I am one of the nurses providing vaccines at a Health Unit. In BC, pharmacists can administer all publicly funded vaccines (including MMR to those eligible) to adults and youth. We always immunize the under 5s.
Here in Victoria we also offer immunization clinics in outreach programmes and clinics, so that people don't have to travel as far. So, we do pack up the vaccine and supplies and become 'mobile'....although I am not vaccinating out of my Fiat 500! We have recently had to put on more clinics +++, as many parents are now choosing to immunize when they previously did not. Sometimes the media helps public heath in a positive way. For those that aren't sure if they are eligible, you're local Public Health Unit will tell you. It does vary by province, as we follow BCCDC guidelines here in BC. |

I am slightly uneasy that Pharmacies can give any vaccinations. Accurate records of vaccinations are crucial and I know by personal experience on a day to day basis that pharmacies don't keep accurate records unlike Health Units. It seems ironic (but good) that you provide outreach clinics in a fairly affluent area with good public transport links whereas other areas which are more rural clearly don't provide the means to come near/to the patient. I hope your model of delivery of care is taken up elsewhere |
Re: Vaccine/Measles etc
Accurate records are indeed crucial. I now have to rummage to see if I can find records of mine. Infection control have sent out guidelines for measles and potential measles patients and only staff with immunity can care for them.

Re: Vaccine/Measles etc
I figure doctors and scientists who are developing the vaccines all have gone to significant training and education specifically in their fields and know what they are talking about. Many times I've noticed when reading online people cite sources written by folks with zero medical or science training as proof vaccines are dangerous, I wouldn't trust a doctor to fly my airplane, just like I wouldn't trust my pilot to cut me open (assuming that most are not dual trained in both) so not sure why parents trust some random person online who happened to write something bad about vaccines... Makes no sense to me.
I see big pharma as a necessary evil, and they need profit, as without it there is no incentive to create the medications we have today that do save lives and we likely would not have if there wasn't money to be made, be nice to have all non-profit pharmacy producers, but its not feasible, so necessary evil. Having grown up in the US I have no access to any records, I had to get blood work done to see what I had immunity to, appears that I was vaccinated for all the childhood stuff, but was told because of my birth year to get a measles booster as I may not have received the correct dose or something, or not enough vaccine or something. My parents lost all the records, and because of the system there and switching insurance companies several times and thus a new doctor, and being the 80's and everything on paper and well not gonna find records from 30 some odd years ago. |

 When I was a kid the public health nurse came to our town and set up a 1 day clinic in a room above the general store and vaccinated every kid in town and surrounding district against polio and I don't know what else. New vaccines and boosters were given at school for years after. Now I get an annual flu shot; they give me coffee and cookies and nurses pay a little attention to me. I don't see any down side. |

You get coffee and cookies with your flu shot? All I got was a sit in this chair for 15 mins and tell me if you feel funny before leaving.

We do flu clinics in various locations, the best one is held at a seniors community centre (but its open to anyone). Free tea/juice and cookies. Pick your location wisely. This year, they were serving homemade chili and bread with dessert for $5. One of the most popular clinics for the nurses signing up to work.
Every time the public health unit had their flu clinics I was either at work, or I was in California, never could find a date on a day off. |
