I don't think that's the case but a lot would depend on location and lifestyle. My mother, for example, is nonplussed by all this yobbishness in the Mail as she doesn't see any. She doesn't see any because:
- she lives in a dull affluent town on the Costa Geriatrica - she doesn't go to the middle of town late on a Friday or Saturday night - she grew up poor in the east end and then had three boys so she has a high threshold of yob detection. She wouldn't, for example, consider two drunk teenagers fighting with fists to be disorderly conduct as she's always been exposed to that. tinytears apparently represents something of the other extreme. She attacked the neighbour's dog apparently because the neighbour was walking it in a hooded sweatshirt. She wants to be careful in Canada, there's a lot of dog walking and hood wearing here. It really is laughable, I mean "You couldn't make it up if you tried" |

It really is laughable, I mean [B]"You couldn't make it up if you tried"[/ We had the same sort of thing when we moved to our first place in NI, 200 yards from where i grew up, i thought i'd moved to another world!! The little darlings would stand and throw stones at my oh's car...all in full view of their parents...and in the end i felt like a caged animal myself..pacing back and forth, looking out the windows and i never slept a full night ever in that place. We spoke to the parents who didn't want to know...so in the end we left before i had a breakdown or hurt one of them:curse: So i feel for Tinytears and her situation, your home should be somewhere you feel safe and that your children should too.....:( |

I am surprised at your commentary.
Agreed, home invasions are indeed terrifying and the trend is troubling; five years ago I had never heard of them in Montreal and environs and, based on what just happened 2 days ago, they do not necessarily take place in the more affluent neighbourhoods. Perhaps it is wise not to open your front door to just anybody. If our door bell rings, unless we are expecting visitors, we simply do not respond. That means we do not also have to worry about religious cults seeking converts, those looking for handouts, traveling salespeople, those who want to do the snow removal, fix the roof, etc, etc. As to murders there has only been one in my neck of the woods, at least that I know of, in the last 35 years. It was a ordinary housewife who, it is thought, came home, surprised a burglar and it turned ugly. Her children got back after school, the door was unlocked, and they found their mum dead. As to the riots, I think you refer to those that resulted when that poor kid got shot by a cop in a north end park. At least not something that happens often. I figure you must live in nuns' island or perhaps the old expo 67 site. Both have a good reputation. I visited them and was quite impressed, plus the proximity to downtown. So I must admit I am surprised to read of what you wrote. Correct, I'm on Nun's Island. Don't get me wrong it certainly isn't the sort of place you will get mugged at night, it's also pretty unlikely that you will be burgled. Effectively it is a giant Cul De Sac, with only one exit, that can easily be blocked by police. However, you start to notice things, lets leave out the double murder that happened 2 streets from me a few months back, it was effectively a domestic. Lots of people have been complaining about their cars being trashed, another person I was speaking to lived next to a "crack house" on the island, and had constant thefts and aggravation. I read the Montreal Gazette every day and notice that a shooting or stabbing gets 5 lines on page 15. I am back in the UK every couple of months, the same sort of crime gets front page billing on the Daily Mail. I've witnessed many things in Montreal, from really nasty fights, to people trying to steal cars, Bicycles. Unfortunately these thugs who carry out home invasions, seem to be getting more violent, and don't care about age or if a family has children. It is something that seems to be far more common in this part of Canada than in the UK. I know the chances of being "hit" are tiny but I do worry having 2 young children. All the best Jonathan |

Maybe she should go the whole hog and taser the bastards:D Well Tiny, I once had a neighbour's dog messing on my lawn. Despite me telling him several times not let his dog do it, and if he did it again I would scoop it up, knock his door, when he opened it, I'd wipe it in his face! This stopped him for a while, but then he'd walk him late at night so I couldn't see, and sure enough in the morning it was there - discusting! A mate of mine came up with this idea, and it worked! Here's what you do. Go to a cash and carry, buy the biggest box of "Vindaloo" curry powder you can buy and spread it on your garden when the dog marks his/her patch! When I did this I heard this almighty "Yelp" at 1:00am. Sure enough, there was the dog running around in circles, sniffing, and scratching his nose bits. Never shit there again ;) Yogi |

I subsequently discovered that the reason for the dog's deposit having a different firmness coefficient from usual was that it didn't come from that house's dog at all. That was terribly unfortunate.

Good thing really, as nothing used to wind me up more on a sunny Sunday afternoon, when the kids were little, than to get in the car after a walk and they were covered in dog muc because of irresponsible dog owners. It's a good thing. If they have them, they should look after them - regardless of habit! Y |

It really is laughable, I mean "You couldn't make it up if you tried" Er and what part of noise induced hearing loss is laughable? What about those who can't move away from the noise, toddlers, babies. Think it through, if a noise is loud enough to irritate the ears its loud enough to damage them. That why older people can't hear the noise, there hearing is already damages. Its assault, plain and simple. |
Re: Tonight
The other thing about Canada which is funny, is that "persons" who are suspected of committing a crime, cannot be described as they actually are- e.g if a Somalian is wanted for a bag theft, he /she can only be described as 5ft 4inches tall, dark hair, wearing a white T shirt and jeans.......in other words you are not allowed to mention the ethnicity...it always makes me laugh cos how many people does that describe!!!

Re: Tonight
I started this thread originally for my own benefit, because I wanted something to come back to when I was feeling homesick to remind me of one of the reasons we wanted to make the move (note I said ONE of the reasons, not the only reason).
However at some 280 topics later this has now moved so far off topic and has gone from the sublime to the ridiculous and back, that I will refrain from commenting further, except to say a huge thank you to everyone who has offered support, comments and PMs of which I am truly grateful to you. For the others - hey ho! It has made interesting reading and been somewhat entertaining and I thank you too for your contributions. Wishing you all a very happy, healthy and propserous 2009, may it bring you everything you wish-for and deserve. :D |
