Tim Hortons Drive Thru?

The two Tim Hortons I drive past to work (I know only two but it is a short commute) both had queues for the drive thru extending onto the main road this morning. That probably means approx 15 cars at one and 10 at the other.

A few weeks ago I remember I was waiting at the lights on Heritage at Deerfoot Meadows when a pick up came down the hill from the opposite direction. It looked like he was going to wait at the lights to do a left turn but instead suddenly drove left over the central reservation and into the strip mall and then joined the queue for the Tim Hortons drive thru. There were probably approx 6 cars ahead of him in the queue. So he was in such a rush he was willing to risk a driving ticket and then just joined the queue?

Maybe when I've been here long enough such behaviour will just seem normal?

I very much doubt it. I don't get it at all. I wouldn't get it even if I liked the stuff they sell in there.

That's more of a reflection of truck drivers in Alberta than the quality of coffee served in Tim Hortons.

Yeah I've had a truck cut infront of me from the outside lane and do a sharp turn in to Tims. It's crazy and I really don't see the appeal.

I love Tim Hortons, they're cheap, you can get a nice selection of stuff for breakfast for 2 people and it usually comes to under $10. In Canada, such value is really quite exceptional.

The Drive Thru's are horrendously slow though. On more than one occasion I've had to convince my girlfriend to just pull up and go inside because it's usually a lot faster. Mind you, in this weather it becomes less appealing to get out your warm car.

My breakfast is always cheaper than that, much much healthier (apart from a festive coffee) and probably tastes a lot better. I make it at home.

The idea of a Tim Hortons' Drive Thru (I can't believe I've just typed that) is appealing. But I'm torn between using a steam roller or a Sherman tank.

Any suggestions?

During our short trip this year, I too noticed this weird obsession with the drive thru at Timmies.

I just parked the car, walked inside to the EMPTY store, got my crappy coffee and box of 40 million Timbits, and was back in the car before the queue had even moved, lol.

I do have to confess to being a coffee noob. I only started this year, so Timmies coffee albiet crap, is a good starter for me :D Triple triple with cream is my poison....quite literally

I think part of the attraction for expats is the illusion of "integrating with the local community" by eating what the locals eat. At least I think that's it as I can't think of any other reason to eat the crap they pass off as food there.

Only had it twice as I don't tend to go there from one week to the next. Had to try it though and it wasn't bad enough. There's some sort of fake egg on the top

There is always a huge line at Timmies at Cross Iron Mills, walk 2 minutes and you can get a pretty decent coffee at Second Cup, plus their cakes are really nice. I have to say if we want that whole coffee house experience Starbucks wins hands down, though Good Earth has recently opened in Airdrie now and is quite good, a bit like Costa.

BTW on the morning of the Calgary Stampede Parade my 8 year counted 100 plus people in the line at a downtown Timmies, honest:rofl:

But I still love the donuts!;)

I'd agree, although it is somewhat awesome driving a '98 half ton and pulling into the drive through (at wherever) at the same time as someone in a shiny new small car - I wonder who's more bothered about their paintwork - "yes I think I will go first thanks very much - you'll still blow by me on the highway when we've got breakfast anyway and get to the destination first - so you owe me......................."

Every time we pass Tim Hortons in our local town I have never seen the place without an ample queue of cars outside the place. We went once whilst on our recce last year (naive I know), both the staff and the coffee were miserable however the doughnuts were quite colourful.

It's all about the donuts. If you're in a donut frame of mind ever, it's a good enough pit-stop. What's with this daft expectation/disappointment that it doesn't deliver better coffee or food? It's like saying: "MacDs - their range of salads is disappointing."

Re: Tim Hortons Drive Thru?

The bus I used to take to work was routinely blocked by the line of SUVs waiting to turn left into a Tim Hortons attached to a petrol station. My thought was shit transit, held up by shit cars, waiting to buy shit coffee.

I really like their steeped tea (as it is impossible to get a decent, really hot cup o'tea anywhere else) and breakfast sandwhich. I like that it's so bad. I like being able to drive up & get it. I am lazy.

The coffee is shit but its more than that, its a depressing chain of places with a depressing post-modern ubiquity.

And these aren't even the "good" donuts they used to make. There was a bit uproar back in--what was it, circa 2005--when they stopped making them (and frying them) on site and said they'd be baking pre-made donuts shipped to outlets instead. I noticed the difference right away. That said, it doesn't seem to have hurt their sales and everyone still eats them.

Yeah, you appreciate it when you move to Australia. Try going to Muffin Break and getting two kids' juices, two muffins, a coffee, and a sandwich for around the $10 mark. That order would run closer to AUD$20 here.

They have toilets. That's the only reason I ever go into one, unless my brother is over. Then we have to go, so he can nick some more mugs.

Dude going into MacDonalds and asking for a salad is like going to a hooker and asking for a hug.

I went in one once because it shared a building with a Wendy's (Wendy's may give this thread new legs), and went right instead of left when I wasn't paying attention.

Not a coffee or tea drinker so I'll probably never frequent the places. Certainly not living in the UK :D
