There's something wrong with my gin and tonic

That's the point, though. If you're going to dilute a spirit with something that will disguise the original taste, why bother buying good stuff?

Could be any one of a million reasons
Nothing you or I can do about it. It used to wind me up too, but life is too short. If someone happens to likes the taste of that particular combination, what more reason do they need.

I'd highly recommend Millers gin, very crisp and pure taste, at its best when served with plenty of ice, a slice of lime and topped with icelandic tonic (which I can't remember the name of, but it's made with glacial water).
Tanq is a decent gin too, Sapphire just tries too hard, it uses some quite horrid chemically extracted flavours (try a little bit of gin with water, it takes the alcohol taste away and lets the actual flavours of the gin come through, you'll be suprised at some of the "premium" gins).

I don't find that ice adulterates the flavour to an extent worth breaking a sweat about. But maybe I just like my whisk(e)y cold.
Other spirits need adulterating to be bearable. Rum and Gin for instance. Both barely drinkable on their own.

No, I don't have any pictures of this happening.

Mmmmm... sounds like Plymouth gin. That's much sweeter than your average dry gin and is very drinkable neat. I wouldn't want it mixed with a tonic, though, as it would taste very odd. My current domestic supply is Bombay Sapphire (laid in in bulk in anticipation of a visit from my mother) though I normally prefer Tanqueray.
