That's the point, though. If you're going to dilute a spirit with something that will disguise the original taste, why bother buying good stuff?

Personal preference, consumer choice, more money than brains, just to wind you up....

Could be any one of a million reasons Nothing you or I can do about it. It used to wind me up too, but life is too short.

If someone happens to likes the taste of that particular combination, what more reason do they need.

Tanq is a decent gin too, Sapphire just tries too hard, it uses some quite horrid chemically extracted flavours (try a little bit of gin with water, it takes the alcohol taste away and lets the actual flavours of the gin come through, you'll be suprised at some of the "premium" gins).
You being in Victoria, have you tried 'Victoria Gin'? If yeah, what do you think of it? I like it as something different to drink neat but I find it too flavourful, too sweet or something for a G&T.

I don't find that ice adulterates the flavour to an extent worth breaking a sweat about. But maybe I just like my whisk(e)y cold.

Other spirits need adulterating to be bearable. Rum and Gin for instance. Both barely drinkable on their own.

Depends on the rum. Good rum is as tasty neat as a fine Cognac or Armagnac. Some of the rums I tasted in Cuba draped their arms around your neck, nuzzled your ear and then stuck their tongues down your throat.

No, I don't have any pictures of this happening.

Mmmmm... sounds like Plymouth gin. That's much sweeter than your average dry gin and is very drinkable neat. I wouldn't want it mixed with a tonic, though, as it would taste very odd. My current domestic supply is Bombay Sapphire (laid in in bulk in anticipation of a visit from my mother) though I normally prefer Tanqueray.

oh hers, definitely. But she's now not coming until September, so it's possible there may be a bit of a dent in the supply by the time she gets here

This is my current preferred gin also (with Schweppes tonic), but is it my imagine or does gin just not have the same strong flavour over here, or perhaps it is just my taste buds getting rather older.

Diluted spirits are nothing more than an alcohol delivery system. Tart fuel.
I prefer to think of it as creating a new flavour.

Okay, so I'm a tart.
