Hi there we took our kids skating friday evening for their first time (oh has played hockey - the ice variety! before so he can skate) but I'm not all that great - can stay on two feet and get around of a fashion!!
I was wondering if anyone would have any advice on teaching young ones to skate or the best approach, in particular my son who is 31/2. Abby did relly well and managed by holding one hand but Ross was a bit of a legs everywhere and couldn't manage to stand up! Hard going on your back. He eventualy got stressed and wanted to go home so we just took his skates off and I stood and watched from the side with him. He wants to go again but was wondering if there was a better way (other than lessons for now until were sure he likes it). Are bob skates advisable??
Many thanks for any help/advice you could provide.

My Canadian husband suggests that your son wears his skates untied with the guards on in the house to strengthen his ankles and gain balance on the blades. I know it is crazy, but yes we've done it...

Our eldest (now 5) has been signed up for skating lessons at the local arena (organised through the figure skating club) for a couple of years. Its about $90 for the season, and seem to have been a lot of lessons (20?)
Shes come on in leaps and bounds this year...not literally, but you know what I mean.
I really think if you dont know what you are doing, and even if you do its a great idea to sign them up young. The only problem is our youngest is chomping at the bit to get on the big ice too, and she cant join for another two years! Oldest had those twin blade strap on skates wen she was little, but #2 bypassed that straight to single blades.

My only other advice is dont cheap out on the kids skates...dont get those plastic boot / ratchet fit ones, get proper ones that will fit tight. Nothing worse than trying to skate in loose, ill-fitting skates.

This is Abby's 2nd week and would you believe it, she hooked up with another little girl a couple of years older than her and held her hand and then skated on her own!!! I was gobsmaked. I didn't think she'd go it alone on her 2nd visit. Give her a couple of weeks and she'll be better than me!!! which won't take much.
Thanks guys for all your helpful info/advice.
IANK - loved your pick that's so cute.
